I'm a fan of a few TV shows. But this is the best of anything on TV today, and far better than any other "procedural." Twisty mysteries but also great cast (hard to get better than Brenda Blethyn) and just enough background story on each of the main characters to keep them interesting without bogging down the main story line.

Totally agree. This show is excellent. I didn't watch it for a while because I am a fan of the Vera Stanhope of Ann Cleeves' books and didn't think anyone could play her as she is depicted in the books. Oh boy, was I was wrong. Brenda Blethyn IS Vera Stanhope. She has morphed into Vera. And the gorgeous and talented David Leon. Whoa!!!!! What a find he is. I also love watching the series for the outstanding atmospheric cinematography. Quality show without parallel. Please keep them coming.
I just started watching this series on dvd, and I really like it. The stories are very well written and the acting is brilliant. My only problem is that it is just too long. I think an hour would cover it.
