Only 4 episodes in a season seems too few

Even though they are 2 hour episodes, only 4 episodes per season seems very few. Anyone feels the same?

reply

Yes, the series needs to go for 8 at least... I'd like to hear more about Vera's childhood she seems a bit tortured...

reply

Too many.

reply

Yes, I need more shows they seem to take forever for the new seasons to start again.

Just finished ep 4 in series 6 on Acorn. Now I'm sad. Such a good program!

That seems to have become the norm for UK series of 2 hr episodes. Probably something to do with the weather. The UK is not Hollywood where the sun shines practically 365 days per year (I probably exaggerate), and where filming can be done with no stoppages for weather.

On another point which would you prefer, quality or quantity?

reply

Quality is preferred. Every time. I also think folks ought to stop comparing British TV to American TV. Let's face it - they're different. I enjoy British TV so much that I have a hard time finding anything worth watching out of Hollywood. Too many spinoffs and reboots. Enough already.

reply

It's similar to the British-American crime drama Sherlock, with movie-length episodes but only a handful are released each season.

Personally, I'd love to see more of both these shows. But I'll take the high-quality writung, acting, and film production over quantity any day!

Well that may be a good thing!
Hey, if you love Vera, you might like River [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4258440/]- also a well-scripted police/crime drama with a top-rated actor (Stellan Skarsgård).('though sadly, not too many episodes available here either.)

reply

I love River. Has there been a second season of that?? I've only seen season 1 on Netflix in the US. And can someone explain British TV seasons to me? Since there's only between 4 to 6 maybe 8 EPS in a season of most British shows, does that mean the shows come on more than once a year? Like maybe in the spring and fall?? Like in the US there's usually 22 to 24 EPS in a season that will run from say, Sept. To Feb. Or March. So I've been curious as to how that works in the UK.

If you like UK police/crime/detective try this guys website

Also by Ann Cleeves who wrote the Vera novels is Shetland. I like the Welsh series Hinterland as well which available in English with subtitles for the Welsh bits. If you don't mind subtitles you might enjoy Beck (Swedish) or Spiral (French).

Thank you, writermaia. Exactly the points I was about to make! 

One other facet to what you were saying: I really enjoy the detail and complexity of the stories. I doubt that the show could keep its complexity and high standards if the output were cranked up.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
