B-O-R-I-N-G

We just tried watching this film and only got about through 1/2 hour. Didn't bother with the rest. It was AWFUL! Normally I love Jodie Foster movies but not this one. I can't understand how it got such a high rating......

reply

Yup, I stopped watching when she said 'I think I'm going to throw up', and would like to add A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G and I-R-R-I-T-A-T-I-N-G and H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E and O-V-E-R-A-C-T-E-D and P-R-E-T-E-N-T-I-O-U-S :-)

reply

Agree. Stopped at 17 minutes.

And silly.

And superficial.

But that was the point where all the fun started :D

I made it all the way through. You didn't miss anything.

reply

@ninawkward: *Like*!!!:-)

Thanx for reassuring, but I actually have a friend who watched it twice and found it hilarious....unfathomable!!!

reply

Seriously i couldnt agree more... I like art and indie movies and i loved coffee and Cigarettes and similar style movies but i cannot understand what people find interesting about this thing (im not even sure this can be called a movie at all its clearly meant to be a theater play)... Is it the Directors name (no interesting shots , camera work, scenery)? the actors (jodie foster overreacting)? what exactly?
Its not even funny unless u find vomiting funny. It has no substance, no "feel" no character development no nothing and its way to short... I sat through the whole thing in hopes that the end will redeem it but not even that happened, the end was just as dull as the rest it... Pretentious is surely the right word in this case imo

reply

Aw, thanks, ThatDoesntMatter! I think I'd have to be really drunk (on Scotch, perhaps) to watch this movie a second time...

bloodbound, you've hit the nail on the head. And I absolutely love Winslet and Foster and have always admired their acting, but they just couldn't save this dud. I didn't laugh at any of scenes. There are far more interesting ways to show that adults can sometimes behave worse than children or whatever the point of this movie was.

There is no good part.

I really want those 80 wasted minutes of my life back. Sadface.

reply

horrible. extraordinarily unrealistic scenario... how could this movie have such a high rating?

reply

I agree too, so much. I also love indie, foreign and high-brow movies. I like smart movies that make me think. That's how I ended up seeing this movie, we were in a local art theater. It stars four of my favorite actors. And I especially love black comedy. I fully expected to enjoy myself, but the film was just torturous. Once I figured out that they were never leaving the apartment, my heart sank. They were trapped in that apartment and so were we.

I totally get the underlying themes of the film - what lies underneath our civil social veneers, worse than even the casual happenstance of schoolyard brutality. Waltz's narcissistic detachment, O' Reilly's blustery ignorance, Foster's liberal naivete, Winslet's hystrionic shallowness. I get it, I really do. What happens when people stop being polite and start being real? Right.

But the execution was just excruciating to sit through. Thank god it was only 80 minutes.

Don’t you ever do any research before you go to see a film. It is a film of a stage play, not an action movie. I saw Carnage last weekend in an Arab country. Many of the movie goers here have no idea what any film is about and come in up to 30 minutes after the film has started. It is just a place to be with their friends, eat popcorn and send txt messages on their mobiles. Just like you guys, around 30% of the audience walked out before half way but the remainder stayed and talking to them afterward, they enjoyed the film. There are serious movie goers here, most of whom have been educated in the US or UK and like me, do research and pick they films they want to see. The following day I went to see Battleship at the IMAX. Again, I knew what to expect before I went, crap dialogue but fantastic special effects action. Carnage and Battleship – completely different films but both provided me with excellent movie going experiences.

reply

By sheer coincidence I watched Battleship and Carnage back-to-back. I found both hilarious in their own ways.

$25 Million for basically a four person play ? What a waste of talent and money.

I laughed when I read this because generally I'm well aware of what I'm going to see. But I stopped at the movie theater to see if anything good was playing. There was nothing that I particularly wanted to see but Carnage (which I had never heard of) was starting in five minutes. Based on the title I thought it was a horror film. Had I known what it was going in perhaps I would've enjoyed it more but I have to admit I found it boring and it just kind of dragged. I did stay until the end though.

reply

Well, i liked it!

reply

I thought it was great. But part of that is I found it very funny.

Comedies seem to split audiences as much as anything. If a film is intended to be funny, and you don't, for WHATEVER reason, find it to be so, nothing else about it will make it good to you. The characters, the story, the editing, score, none of that will matter if you don't like or get the comedy.

I appreciate that the film proceeded to a rather ugly pileup of an ending, but all along I found it very funny. If I am laughing I am not bored. So, I assume those who were literally bored did not get the film.

reply

meh, I found it funny and not boring at all.

Painful at times and poorly made, there was no real need for them to remain in the apartment. When they reached the elevator twice, it seemed so forced and fake when they managed to come back inside. Its like I can almost imagine Polanski saying, ok wee need to have you lured back into the house and then John Reily suggests coffee.

The sole reason they got back into the house was to move the story forward. Also Jodi Foster overacted so hard, it was painful to watch her scenes. Waltz's accent was terrible and unintelligible at times. Winslet came of pretty poorly too, her drunk acting was terrible.

The only saving grace to me was anytime John C Reily was talking, he did a great job playing his role. Did not overact, stole the show in my opinion. Stellar performance.

Also the cell phone constantly ringing was incredibly annoying, I was waiting for one of the characters to get annoyed and throw it somewhere, it was painfully obvious to me that that was coming up sometime.

Also the characters were common caricatures, overbearing PC wife + "ignorant" old school husband.

The yuppie dissatisfied wife + workaholic douche husband.

When the movie opened and Waltz answered his phone and grunted like a pig while he laughed, i thought that the movie was going to be hilarious.

Unfortunately a miss for Polanski.

You know what the Queen said? If I had balls, I'd be King.

perfect analysis motoineccentrica agree 100%

reply

I agree with motoineccentrica and the OP.
Comedy? I don't think I laughed once. Most horror films are funnier. Buried was funnier.
Until it was almost over, I thought it was an overly drawn out buildup to the confrontation between the kids, and/or the unscrupulous drug company vs the world.
I knew it was supposed to be comedy, but forgot once I started watching.
To bad they didn't just get in the elevator the first time like normal people would have in those circumstances. Then mom could have brought Zachery by and forced a confrontation which the kids would have avoided without parental interference.
I suppose, to some, vomit is humorous. Also uncouth people are funny to some. Drug companies and lawyers not caring about people is kind of humorous, in a way, maybe, or at least would be if it weren't so true.
They were all stupid, which many people find funny. Also abuse of dumb animals is funny to most people, but my sense of humor isn't that well developed so the idea was simply offensive to me, as was both sets of parents lack of understanding of their own offspring or the world they live in.
It might have been funny if I'd been drunk enough, though I doubt it.

Agreed. Managed around 15 minutes before I started fast forwarding. What a piece of *beep* movie.

reply

Well, I dont know about boring but yes, when you watch 4 persons talking in a room for 80 minutes, it can be a bit much, but I couldn't say 'boring'..more like, not bad, except for the abrupt ending that left things untidy-ed up . Lets just say that you wouldnt be missing any classic if you decide to skip it. And if you do watch it, you'll probably forget it in a month or so.

It's not your average Hollywood-esque comedy. You probably laugh with sitcom TV and that kind of humor. With a punchline every 2 lines. Thats not comedy thats circus.

To find a parallel that you'd understand.... Its like a *hitstorm of a flame war over the most mundane subject, in a "civilized" board. I do get a kick out of those sometimes.

reply

maybe for those that didn't like it you could you could pop in Saw IX or Alvin & the chipmunks the Squakual. seems to be more up your alley. that way you don't have to think and there isn't a lot dialog or plot for that matter.
i hear there is a cure for A.D.H.D. now.

reply

Good analogy LOL

reply

Yeah you are probably right, personally I found the movie hilarious. It's funny how they reveal their true personalities more and more towards the end, especially as they get drunk.
