I don't really get it either. I mean I understand the dynamics and the character facets that emerge over time. For example, Michael begins as the gentle pacifier, but eventually drops the facade (a bit like trying to keep your gut in before you give up and lose the top button). From that point on, he makes it clear that he has as little interest in the boys' fracas as Alan. We also see the marital tensions develop and become more exposed, especially once the alcohol starts flowing.

As a play, it would be moderately entertaining; as a film, it was just tedious. Foster's hystrionics didn't work for me and the scene where the two women laugh hysterically at the men felt really fake. Also, they all got drunk way too quickly.

I'm not one to quit a film halfway through, so I ploughed through; however, I was expecting a lot more from Polanski and a fine cast.

Then this is just not your thing. For me, I enjoy seeing a play/film where the characters, the acting and the interplay among them draws you in. Well, draws me in, anyway. It's not good or bad or anything. Just not your thing.
