The 'ending' (spoiler)

I just really don't understand the abruptness of the ending. At least that's how it felt to me (abrupt). Quite enjoyed the film but still just don't get the shot of the hamster followed by the two boys playing in the park. I get that perhaps the hamster is some sort of metaphor and that the two boys are getting along while their parents are still drunkenly fighting over a schoolyard incident but it just feels very abrupt. I realize that real life isn't always tied up in a neat package but am not a fan when films attempt this (usually). There could have at least been a sloppy drunk leaving scene or something. SOMETHING! Just my humble opinion.

Wasn't the hamster the daughter's pet? The kids are fine. The parents - not so much.

"This guy just telephoned a psycho-killer to come down and psycho-kill us!"

Are you suggesting that one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema change the ending on this movie because you don't "understand" it? What chutzpah!

reply

As I said, just my humble opinion as a viewer. Even the greatest can do something that isn't perfect. My comment was not meant to offend. If you can explain what he was going for with the ending, by all means go ahead. I'd love to hear it.

I get that. Absolutely. Still just felt a bit stunted to me like there was nowhere else to go so let's just end it....NOW. Either way, I enjoyed the beginning and middle of the film, just felt a little jilted by the ending.

The hamster is that hamster they were talking about earlier. The idea was to show it was safe outside. And the two boys playing shows that they did make up.

reply

I totally get that. I just didn't care for the way that they did it. But I'm no expertand can only speak for myself. I really did enjoy the movie but didn't care for the ending. It just felt very abrupt to me. I've felt this way about other films as well when most people disagreed with me. I guess I have "abrupt movie ending disappointment syndrome" haha

The hamster was not safe. Those runners stepped on it. The movie made a weird screech noise as the ran by.

reply

It was to show that no one cared for the hamster or the boys in the end. They would have argued about anything.
So if you didn't care, it's okay, that was the point.

Ha! Very interesting point of view. Thanks!

I was also thrown off at first but I think it's the perfect way to end this. They stated that they were about to leave but we, as an audience, leave first. They almost leave constantly during the film, but they always go back into the house in this never ending loop that ultimately drives them to carnage, so when they say "we're leaving" and we don't see it, it's almost as if they'll never actually leave, reinforcing this claustrophobic feeling the film built.

It closed on a punchline in the ringing phone. It's classic last laugh -> fade to dark in theatre.

It's supposed to be abrupt, that's part of the joke.
