not before it's time

Both My late father-in-law & Uncle were stationed in Haifa between 1945-1948 and had often regaled me with the state of affairs in this region at this time. On the whole, the series so far is very balanced and accurate, It was a very nasty period of history, and what used to annoy my FIL was that his colleagues efforts were never recognised by the British Government, in fact they seemed to have been erased from history so as not to upset the Americans or Israelis. To him, it seemed that the Government was embarrassed by this period of history and so ignored those who served in the British forces there.

I found the whole series so far very poignant, because it's like watching a film of all my FIL recollections. My FIL was not anti-Israeli or anti Jewish, however it upset him that the likes of the Stern and Irgun gang were feted as heroes by most of the successive Israeli governments. In fact at his wake we learned that his best friend was shot dead out there in front of him by a sniper whilst they were playing football. He was in a barbers shop down the road from the King David hotel when it went up. He recounted to me vividly the aftermath of the Deir-Yassin massacre initiated by Zionist terrorists in 1948 The behaviour of the Irgun gang at this atrocity was tantamount to that of the Nazis is not an understatement.

Yes, the Irgun and Stern gang were as brutal and vicious as they are portrayed. To say that they were freedom fighters is to say the IRA and al-Qaida are the same. We all know what the Palestinian terrorists have done so at least we are now seeing that both side played an equal part to the mess that is Israel/Palestine today.

For the record I am not anti Jewish and I support the existence of Israel, In fact I would support the Jews before I would the Muslims. However the creation of Israel could have been handled better by all sides.

This series should have been made years ago.

on what basis would you support the Jews before you would the Muslims? Do you have a ranking of religions and people that are worthy?? Your kind of mentality is the stuff that hatred and racism are made of!!

reply

I'll tell you why, I have been to Israel on a number of occasions and I have never felt vistimised becasue of my religon, whereas in Muslim countries that I have visited I was not alllowed to have any Christian iconogrophy visible on my person. So if you are a Muslim, then get your own house in order first!

Also, as someone raised as a Christian I feel more an afinity towards the Jewish people than I would the Muslims. I was brought up to beleive that the Jews are the chosen people of God.

really difficult to argue against that sort of mentality- sad person that you must be!

I am sorry to hear of the intolerance you may have experienced from Muslims. Islam teaches tolerance and peace with your neighbours if anything but you must remember not all Muslims are a good indication of the religion's teachings. I am surprised however that you have more affinity with Jews than Muslims as Christianity and Islam are more closely linked than Judaism. Although all three are Abrahamic Jews do not accept Jesus whereas Muslims believe he was a messenger of god and that there will be a second coming.

so you think that the people who think that jesus is a son of bad woman and they let a thief get away but wanted jesus to be crucified and took his blood on them and children till the end of days (according to your gospels) these people are better than people who love jesus and consider him as a great holy man! don't worry, many christians are as brain damaged as you are.

Your father in law was a big man. I have to say, if I'd gone through what Len went through in this - being shot at, blown up, kidnapped, tortured, personally betrayed and seeing his friends' deaths being celebrated, all the while being publicly vilified as a Nazi and a fascist by the people he thought he was there to help - well, I'd hate Israel and find what happened to me very difficult to forgive.

That's not to say that I, personally, hate Israel. I don't, nor do I have any sympathy for the Islamist or Palestinian terrorists today, but what the Jewish terrorists got up to here was really outrageous and nothing like that should ever be whitewashed, so yes, this series isn't before time.

The thing I take away from the British point of view is that they really seemed to be doing the best job they knew how to in order to help civilians. It's hard to say the same about the way the Israelis were portrayed here.
