A great movie!

OK so I might be flamed on my post, so be it.

I find a lot of Mexican movies are overly sentimental and hokey.

This movie is great. What they are showing is a region of extreme poverty and what the people are doing to get by. Yes I know this is not all of Mexico just as boys in the hood is not all of the USA.

The only problem I had was Benny smiled too much when he was talking to Reyes

That's an interesting detail about the smiling. I noticed it too, but I felt it was a part of Benny's character, trying too hard and too obvious to by liked by Reyes. He was weak in this way, just as Reyes was weak in ways of his own.
