thoughts on what could have made it better?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film for what it was. I've read comments on the forum about the drug use being way too over-the-top; for me, I think that is what ruined this movie. I mean, are we supposed to believe they do this level of drug usage once every year and go back to their regular life and not have a problem? I think there was a really good story in this, but it was way too overshadowed by forced continuous drug use and forced music. It felt at times I was watching a music video instead of a feature length film. Oh well, the experimental aspects of the directing sucked me in so I'd give it a generous 6/10.

What are YOUR thoughts?

I'm ten minutes into the film, and I agree with your assessment. Watching these idiotic middle-aged a-holes is a big reason whyI'm so happy I never married, and never will..

OK...I just saw the racing-the-red aportscar scene in the deser while snorting coket. It's ofgicial-----these characters are *beep* with no redeeming qualities, no matter what has happened to them in their lives.

*Christian McKay didn't seem to fit in with the other guys, and his backstory was too confusing.

*Jeremy Piven's backstory seemed like something they thought up at the last second without any effort

*The "guy banter" seemed inauthentic at times, particularly since they were so f'ed up

*The "town kids" coming over to join their party didn't seem right....they have a lot of money obviously, but they're cool with two girls bringing their KID GUY FRIENDS over to freeload off of them, then insult them?

The thing that almost ruined it for me was the constant barrage of sound effects throughout the movie. Sometimes the SFX were so loud and overpowering they drowned out the dialog, which was essential in the understanding of the subtext of the movie. The editors did a terrible job on the mix. I have a premium sound system, but finally had resort to using my professional-grade headphones (Sony MDR-7506) in order to get a better mix.
I also agree that the party scenes went on too long and with the muddled dialog, it gave very little insight to these characters.

Thanks, I thought it was my crappy sound system! I have an old but decent system with no remote so I was constantly adjusting the sound!

The cop character wasn't needed. The stakes were high enough already without the need for the usual 'genre tools'.

A storyline?

I just think this style of movie-making is drab and dull

That they didn't report in Tims suicide made absolutely no sense at all. No matter how responsible they felt, they were not liable. Also, they could have burned or hid the note. Instead they buried him one foot under in the back yard, left his car in the driveway and went for dinner at the local restaurant.

Unless, of course, they had already decided to die at this point. Which also made no sense, pact or no pact. What's the lesson in that? Take responsibility for your lives and fix what needs fixing. Not everyone can be a success, but you can do the best with what you got. The doctor could change his practice and actually help people, the teacher could help and inspire his pupils instead of bore them and perhaps try to find love and someone who could accept him for what he was, which actually was not so bad. Ron could have faced the music, see if his wife would stay in despite of everything, cooperate with the police and serve his sentence. Suicide, hard as it is, was still just the easy way out for these people. Just like the drugs, the shallowness and self-indulgence.

My two cents.

I didn't like the first hour. But surprisingly the film got better in the second half as it took a different direction. I would say it was depressing and morbid. Worth seeing if one is in to male gender orientated movies. Not to say that it isn't relevant to women. The main theme is something that any person can touch upon, but will not appeal to all. However I was slightly disappointed that the film didn't have the message of courage and hope. A little short on the character development element and there was no insight in to showing how man could continue to live a courageous life despite all struggles, hardships and failures he may go through. Their issues and failures were realistic. Perhaps a positive message in the end could give the viewer a moral message on how to face challenges in life. Some people do appreciate to having learnt something from watching a movie of this nature. Otherwise there are great performances. The direction is top standard as well as cinematography. Not forgetting a fantastic music soundtrack.
