In my opinion, Skipper did not

lie. If you listen to his "the Jolly Wrenches flew the..." he never says "I flew the ....".

His stories were probably true, they were just other planes. So technically he didn't lie, or I didn't hear correctly.

God loves you as if you were the only person on this earth.

He did admit he lied.

reply

He admitted he only did one mission and never flew again. He never lied hejust didnt tell th whole truth. He was probably still a kick ass instructor "those who cant do. Teach"

reply

However, he was still on the wall of valor as being a hero, so has nothing to be ashamed of.

reply

Exactly, with Purple Heart to boot.

I actually was listening to his dialogue as when he was introduced I half-expected him to be shown as a fake before the end of the movie. I thought it would be revealed that he never made it overseas, being solely a trainer at home, damaged before being deployed, or the war ended before he could be deployed (see Waldo Pepper).

As far as I could tell he never said he was involved in the actions he described, only that the Jolly Wrenches encountered various difficulties. He never seemed to trade on the presumed experience that people assumed about him and when the extent of his service was revealed he didn't prevaricate or make excuses. I think he deserved a lot more credit than he was given in the script, but OTOH he wasn't the star of the film either.

reply

An attempt to deceive is lying even if everything said was true.
