sure its inspire by the original karate kid, but hey, tell me that you don't know any movies that look so much like a movie you saw previously. To this point we could say any slasher movies are coming from the Halloween script...
Or we could say every college teen comedies come from Animal House or Revenge of the nerdz if you wanna go with classics.
Dosen't matter a movie is inspire by another one, as long as its good and fun to follow. There is not much familly movies these days like that. I sure enjoyed the Karate kid remake, but i don't think it call as much as the original did, even if the fights where much betters. Being in china, with a black kid with dreds and a rapper look, im sorry but its not that im racist or anything, but i doubt if i saw that when i was 8 i would have been hooked that much into it, cause the main character was so far from me. Part of the original karate kid was that you could recognize yourself in the character, didn't matter i was from quebec and the movie was set in the US, the characters looked like it could be anyone near where i lived.
Today, kickboxing or karate is not as popular as it was before, kids look more trought boxing or UFC type of matchs. So i think them trying to kind of ramake the karate kid over a boxing standard is a good thing. They even tribute in the movie to there inspiration...
