Decide for yourself, but to this DM1 lover, pretty awful

I couldn't believe how bad it was. So much potential completely wasted. This was a disjointed, meandering, mixed up mess. It was like they really had no idea what to do with Gru after making him a good guy. The villain was lousy and there was no suspense whatsoever during the final fight. I had to go home and watch the first one again to wash the bad taste of this garbage out of my mouth...

reply

Im a DM1 lover and i think DM2 is just as good if not better.
You say the villain is lousy, in fairness they could of done something better but there was so much other stuff going on that it didnt really matter.

reply

Yeah that's part of the problem. So much other stuff going on, a lot of it just plain boring, and none of it as focused and carefully woven together as the first film. Just a loose jumble, a lot of throwaway material.

I mean, look at the "Bank of Evil (formerly Lehman Brothers)" in the first movie. Not only was that a fantastic, hilarious explanation for where supervillains get the funding for their capers, but it was further tied into the plot in that Vector was the bank president's son. In 2, (spoilers) Margo has a brief flirtation with the villain's son, but this is basically a coincidence and doesn't impact the plot much at all. What if the kid had turned out to be a budding supervillain himself? What if he was part of a plot of his dad's to get at Gru? What if he had to choose between Margo and his dad? Just throwing ideas out there, to show how much wasted potential the movie had

I don't understand the purpose of that reply. The references to critics and audiences seems oddly irrelevant. It seems like you're resorting to the tired, lazy IMDB defence of 'other people like it, so you must not get it! *blows raspberry*'. Very immature, you should stay focused on the actual discussion.

(Spoilers)

Yeah you know there was loads of roads that could of been taken that werent... Margo and the son, El macho after he took the serum, what happened, did he end up in Grus lab? ... the brilliant Steve coogan was barely used, what happened with the wig guy?

DM1 wasnt soley just a plot about a bad guy who was trying to upstage the new up and comer.... That had aload of seperate things going on aswell

In DM2 certain elements of the story had to play out the way they did....... all films about a single dad or single parent end up with their kids trying to set them up..... they had to go that road, because even in real life its relatable.

As a movie buff i enjoyed the scanners reference, the Alien reference and the nod to World War Z

And the bit at the end where the minions were singing "i swear", i found that hilarious..... i know a lot didnt, im not even sure why i found it so funny but im glad i did.

Give the movie another shot.

reply

This was a movie for the minions and nothing else. They are shamelessly trying to cash in on that and had to add Gru just to stay a little relevant to the first one.

My heart is dead, and so are you!

Where was there a nod to World War Z? Must have been a coincidence seeing as the film just came out.

reply

(Spoilers)

It's where Gru and his two minions are climbing up the tower at the very end and are stuck on the flagpole. The purple minions are climbing over each other like the zombies do in world war Z.

reply

I suppose it could be a WWZ reference, even though WWZ was only released a few weeks before this picture was. That seems to me to be a bit of a stretch, though, because the idea of invaders climbing over one another isn't especially new.

reply

Give it another shot? Thanks, but no thanks. I already spent over $30 to see this junk that nearly put me to sleep...I'm not going to spend another dime on it, not even to rent it from Redbox. Look, if a movie is really good, you don't need to see it twice to realize it's good. I knew the first one was good on first viewing, because it IS. This one is simply...not.

reply

How did you manage to spend THIRTY BUCKS on this??? A boutique theater serving hors d'oeuvres and fine wines? :-)

reply

I took two kids.

reply

That will do it. In fact, it sounds like you may have gotten off light.

It does impact the plot. Did you even watch the movie? Gru suspects the father of being El Mach0 (even though AVL suspects and later arrests Floyd the hair club guy) because he is being protective of his daughter Margo. It fits in very well. All of your other points are just plain dumb.

reply

I agree that DM2 was -terrific- which highlighted the Minions, who were hilarious and deserved the added attention. The original DM set the standard and DM2 took it over the top. I enjoyed the second film even more than the first because relationships were actually defined between Gru and the children. His vulnerability, in terms of establishing romantic attachments, was displayed too. The inventive gadgets and non-stop action kept my attention and all in all it was a rollicking adventure.

reply

Cry me a river! I thought the first one was great, but this one is even better. It was hilarous!

reply

I cannot imagine why anyone would not like this movie except that it was very different from the first one which I was not crazy for. Perhaps this one is more "americanized" than its predecessor. The first "Despicable Me" had a definite euro-vibe to it that some people liked and others (like me) found off putting. Perhaps the French creators caved to studio demands to make it more American friendly and that is what some people don't like about it. But I'll argue that there was a lot of "French" stuff in this movie, most notably the minions whose accents sounded very French especially the song at the wedding.

reply

What a load of crap!! The first movie had a 'euro-vibe' that you found off putting?? What the f are you talking about. Why do you hate french people?? What is wrong with you?

reply

Sorry, but I enjoyed it and my daughter LOVED it. She had the best time watching it. She was laughing so hard she just about choked on her popcorn.

I completely agree. This film was a terrible muddle. Neither the love interest or the villain were developed enough so it was just a mish-mash of things that i felt very indifferent towards. And the love interest isn't even that likeable with her annoyingly OTT vocal intonations. The minions are WAAAAY overexposed, people give their slapstick a bit too much credit because i don't find it to be that funny. Oooh, they're singing a well known song in their KEEERRRAZZZYYYY voices! Cheap writing. What was i meant to laugh at in this film? Gru dressed as a fairy? The tortilla hat? LIPSTICK TAZEEEEEEEEEEEEEER? Purple minions? And don't call me humourless because i found Despicable Me 1 VERY amusing and other assorted animated films like Shrek and Toy Story. It felt very inconsequential and like the screenwriters were on autopilot.

My younger siblings enjoyed it but i was getting real fidgety around the midway point. It's completely average.

You definitely get it...exactly my thoughts.

I agree!

Col. Briggs, what a wonderful moment this must be for you.

reply

We just saw it and I liked it better than the first one. All the things Kard shooter mentioned I was laughing at!! Oh well, to each his own.

reply

100% with you.

reply

Agreed...it was schlock and decidedly inferior to the original, which was, in turn, outclassed by virtually all the Pixar creations.

reply

I liked DM1..but this did meander all over...
like it was just a bunch of gags thrown together..
not bad.. just not as cute as the first one.

reply

I thoroughly enjoyed DM2, but I also liked the first one a little better, for a variety of reasons.
