I just watched it for the first time and...

I like DM1 much better. I don't think this movie is bad per se, I just think it had so much wasted potential. I'll go with my pros.

Pros:

Great animation

Very Funny

Fun

Great continuation of the original including numerous references

Lucy's great

The girls are great as usual

The voice acting is top-notch, especially with Steve Carrell again

Some funny side characters like Julianne and Shannon

Now for the cons.

Cons:
Messy story with too many unneeded and unresolved sub-plots (i.e. Margo and Antonio)

Bad villain. I like Al Pacino, but El Macho is stereotypical and stupid. Not nearly as good as Vector

Too much minions. I love them just as much as the next person, but they are overused so much in this movie, that they become central to the plot. But you can't blame them because the "cha-ching" from families and little kids is too loud for Illumination to hear this problem, and guess what, now we have a full frickin' movie about these guys!

Lacks the heart of the first, and again, it could have had it with the girls and wanting a mother, but it's potential was wasted. In DM1, the orphan girls and Gru starting to love them over time is extremely heart-felt and sometimes made me tear up

Why so much comedy? After every other sentence we get a joke, some slapstick, or something trying to bring a laugh out of everyone for no reason. And unfortunately, some of these missed.....really.....hard

Dr. Nefario is underused and his little quick goodbye for an evil job, which, by the way was a HUGE SHOCK that the job was with the villain, and sudden good will to save the heroes makes no sense.

The plot is achingly predictable. I predicted all the main plot points. Gru will get with Lucy, Antonio is El Macho's son, Margo and Antonio won't be together that long, Eduardo is El Macho, Dr. Nefario's new job is with El Macho, Lucy will come back after wanting to see Gru again and be captured by El Macho, and the minions are part of El Macho's evil plan. I'm not kidding! I actually predicted this in my own head during the movie! I was waiting for something special, something to get me engaged again, and something to surprise me, but nothing happened.

Again, it's not a bad movie, but as it is, in my opinion, it is a mediocre and stupid attempt for a sequel to an amazing movie such as Despicable Me. So much potential and excitement......wasted for more $$$$$$ from all the families and their little kids with stuffed Minions wearing Minion t-shirts.....

It took so long to finally get to the villain's master plan, that when when you finally found out about it, it was quickly wrapped up and defeated.

Who would have thought they could actually make a zombie movie for kids?

***Spoiler Alert ***

In the end, the girls are so happy to finally have a mother, and Agnes reads her cute little mother speech, but nothing was really done in the movie to set up Lucy as a mother figure. All they did was get try to get Gru a date and now, suddenly, they are all one happy family. You actually never did see Lucy kiss Agnes' boboo.

Suddenly? I guess you missed the part where it said "147 Dates Later ..."

That helps establish the relationship between Gru and Lucy, but then, for all you know, the girls might despise Lucy. Where are all the mother/daughter bonding experiences between Lucy and the girls? Just hand-waved, I guess.

147 dates later ...
and the girls grew to like her too.

Perhaps the whole movie should have been reduced to just another 10 minute bonus short on the DVD. Did we really need 90 minutes of "spoon-feeding"?

Pacino pulled out at the last minute. Benjamin Bratt does the voice of El Macho.
I agree, it was ok but nothing to write home about. 1 was much better.

Really? I forgot about that.
But at least I'm not the only one to feel this way...

Messy story with too many unneeded and unresolved sub-plots (i.e. Margo and Antonio)

-This was basically solved, just not wrapped up with a bow. Antonio dances with another girl, so Margo now dislikes him as well. Then Gru freezes him. So Gru and Margo win and she goes and dates some other Bieber-haired boy who is hopefully nicer, I guess. Don't see it as unresolved.

Bad villain. I like Al Pacino, but El Macho is stereotypical and stupid. Not nearly as good as Vector

-So he's stereotypical, big deal. It's an animated kid's movie. Who cares? Not as good as Vector by a long shot because of the wrong jokes. More mentions of chest hair than direction and magnitude.

Too much minions.

-Didn't think it was so bad in this one. I like minion humor overall and I liked the Minions movie, but I did not love it the way I loved the two DM films. Minions are funny but are only at their funniest when Gru is still in the picture. Kind of like Abbott needs Costello.

Lacks the heart

-Has heart, just less of it.

Why so much comedy? After every other sentence we get a joke, some slapstick, or something trying to bring a laugh out of everyone for no reason. And unfortunately, some of these missed.....really.....hard

-Why. So. Much. Comedy. ???? HA HA! I mean, I was already laughing, but...HA HA! It's a KIDS COMEDY MOVIE. You're complaining about slapstick jokes? Really? HA HA!

Dr. Nefario is underused

-I'm sure Russell Brand was off doing something else and didn't have the time to do a whole film so they cut his part.

The plot is achingly predictable

-Oh, holy cow! You predicted EVERY SINGLE THING? I'm amazed! Oh wait...
NOT! Again, you seem to be forgetting this is a kid's movie. We're obviously both at least a little older than the normal age group for the DM films, but come on! Just sit back and enjoy a fun animation movie for an hour and a half, will you? This is not a movie to be that kind of a film critic on. Not in that way.

Again, it's not a bad movie,

-No, it's not.

So much potential and excitement......wasted for more $$$$$$ from all the families and their little kids with stuffed Minions wearing Minion t-shirts.....

-Did you...expect...anything else?

-The film was good overall. Of course it won't surpass the original. How often does that happen? Not very.

reply

Yeah, DM1 was better. DM2 was decent though. Not awful.
