Numbers

Anybody have an opinion whether there was supposed to be some type of meaning or symbolism with the whole aspect of numbers presented throughout this film?

When we first meet Abe he is loafing and not completed the spreadsheet full of numbers.

Then when first hanging out with Miranda he tells her the date they met holds meaning I think he said - "its not the date that's important... but the numbers" (or something like that) and how they mean something etc.

Then he asks his Mother to pay him for the exact dollar amount of $845 from their backgammon games along with mentioning the specific month since they first started keeping score (more numbers). She then says something like "you were always so good with numbers".

The repeated shot of the building were he works the number 99 is cryptically shown.

The whole issue with the receipt, the second time he returns with it, it is wet and the clerk says he cant make out (one assumes the numbers) Then Mahmoud tells him that "everyone has one but it never adds up..its called ....(I think he was about to say 'Death').

The dates his Dad wrote on the wall height chart.

Then lastly, the technical error regarding the exact date of his Death incorrectly inscribed on his headstone.

This aspect of numbers was something that was presented throughout the entire film. So I just wonder if Solondz perhaps had some kind of special symbolic meaning behind it all?

I wonder if it's supposed to. Of maybe Sonlondz was just playing with us, as a person will usually come up with far fetched theories regarding it. I wish more people would reply to this post. You have made excellent observations.

I don't think the numbers mean anything.

However I now feel extraordinarily confident that more people will eventually reply.

I notice that you joined IMDB 3 years and 7 months ago, yet this is your very first post.

Yeah, I am a bit of a lurker to be honest.

Trust me, dates & numbers have to be right.

I'm still not sure what the number under the wallpaper referred to. Did I miss something glaringly obvious? Your numbers observations is good, and I'm there is something to it. Also, when the girl was giving him her phone number, that seemed to be dragged out quite a bit too. I don't know if I could watch it again, it's rather painful to watch.
