This is at my DVD store

I haven't watched it yet, but I might do so tonight. I was surprised when I saw it, because I didn't know it existed, and I usually know what movies Christina Ricci is in. From the cover, (and I know these things can be deceptive sometimes) it doesn't look very good...

It's a melodrama, doesn't make a lot of sense. Feels a bit like a student film, with some help from a civil war re-enactment society. It's shot very stagily, and edited using dissolves for about half of the cuts. Most of the shots don't match each other, like they are different colours. There are some pretty roughly inserted special effects too. I guess it was a labour of love for the director/writer/editor, but it doesn't work at all.

What DVD store, where? Where is this DVD available?

RE: "but it doesn't work at all."

Your technical criticisms are valid due to an obvious low-budget, but the film does work on the most important level -- storytelling. My wife & I saw it separately and we both enjoyed it -- the story pulls you in and maintains your interest until the end with convincing acting by the principles.

As to your criticism that it "doesn't make a lot of sense," hogwash. The plot & moral are simple as pie.

This is available at United Video here in NZ. Don't bother though as it is not good at all, for the reasons given above. We ejected it after 20 minutes.

NZ = New Zealand. (My post above)

Wow, how the mighty have fallen. I am surprised Christina Ricci would star in something that looks like an amateur-ish student film.

I also highly doubt the budget was $5 million for this thing. My guess is that it was closer to $5,000

While it's true that the film has an amateurish vibe, I don't doubt that it cost $5 million in light of the impressive cast (for an Indie) and the convincing Civil War Reenactors. This is where the bulk of the $5 million went to, not to mention catering/lodging for cast & crew.

Thankfully, the story's captivating and the acting is convincing. I'd rather see a movie that is technically weak, but has a good story than a technically great film with a lousy story.
