Amyl nitrate or amyl nitrite?

Towards the end of episode 2, when Robert apparently has heart problems, he asks Sarah to get "amyl nitrate" from his room. At least it sounds like that, and that's what the subtitles had.

Shouldn't this be amyl nitrite, a vasodilator?

reply

Probably a mix-up or just the way the actor delivered the line.

I was quite confused by that scene, I didn't have subtitles on and found the dialogue was indistinct. I wasn't sure, was Robert suffering a panic attack or angina or asthma?

reply

He was having an angina attack.

reply

It's referred to in the book as "nitrate of amyl". The terms seem to have been used interchangeably in those days. It was a common treatment for angina, which is what Robert has.

reply

Cheers, all becomes clear now
