Re: 1974 YTV version

It's a long time since I saw it, so I've started to rewatch it and am now about half-way through. There's obviously far more of the book in it, including the supporting characters and subplots (Sarah's MP ex-boyfriend, her sister Pattie, the Mitchells, the Sawdons, the Hubbards, & co.).

Some of the casting strikes me as better – Hermione Baddeley looks more like book-Emma – but not all. As Anne said, Norman Jones's Scots accent is – ahem! –interesting, and he isn't "pretty" (Joe, in the book, is described as "pretty"!). However, Dorothy Tutin as Sarah was probably too pretty, and I thought Nigel Davenport too dashing and out-going as Robert. David Morrisey may have been a bit on the young side, but he was more "heavy-looking", dark and sullen.

I just wish the 2011 cast had been able to do the 1974 script. A lot of the dialogue is straight from the book, and we get back-stories & c.

I have now received my copy of the 1974 version and I'm looking forward to watching it! I hope it's as good as I remember.

It's excellent – very faithful to the book – and again, filmed on location. I recognised Withernsea ('Kiplington') lighthouse.

I've now finished watching the 1974 version again (something of a marathon weekend!) and have posted on its IMDb board. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but wished Sarah had tipped Robert's dinner over his head in Manchester because of his comments about German politics. (We've already heard Sarah confide in Joe about her worries about her friends in Germany, including the bloke who's been 'disappeared' into a camp.) I certainly would have done (and run right back to Joe).

I read your detailed review on the other site, Silverwhistle. I have only watched a couple of episodes so far but I'm enjoying it very much. At first I thought it was going to be too slow but once I'd got used to the gentler pace I really got into it. It makes me realise how much was missed from the 2011 series. I'll post again when I've watched more but so far I'm impressed. I'm also surprised how much of it I remember! Perhaps I saw the repeat in the 80s and forgot that I had done so.

Yes, it's superb: I wish the 2011 version had used the 1974 script.
