Midge's grandfather

shows up at the wake. Presumably he is Muriel's father, yes? Weere he and Robert estranged because of Muriel' marriage to Robert or her condition (or both)?

reply

Both. The book explains. The family hadn't wanted Muriel to marry because of her fragile mental condition, guessing she would go the same way as her mother (which she did). Lord Sedgemire also believed (mistakenly) that Robert, rather than Muriel, had pursued the marriage and more or less carried her off.
