Which war are they returning from?

Just watching this series (and not having read the book) I'm puzzled about the soldiers just home from the front.

Where were British troops fighting in 1934? I think that's when the first episode was set.

Some synopses talk about Sarah returning to Yorkshire now that the First World War is over, but that ended in 1918.

reply

WWI. Those are flashbacks. Also, though WWI ended in 1918, British society (as indeed, much of Europe) continued to feel its impact nearly twenty years after Armistice.

reply

Yes that is correct it is WW1 that is referred to and of course Winifred's best friend Vera Brittain lost her brother and fiance in WW1 (do wish they would also do a drama based on Testament of Youth) as well as I think another friend who eventually died so as Evangeline says the impact remained. It's possible some maybe went to fight with the Spanish in the Civil War about 1936 ish? Long shot suggestion but just a thought given how progressive Winifred and Vera were they might have known people who did.

Oakcourt, they HAVE dramatised Testament of Youth - back in 1979.
It starred the beautiful Cheryl Campbell, and was extremely moving.
It's all on youtube. Part One here:

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

Ah thank you Supergran. Will watch that. Funny I was 16 in '79 but don't recall it, having said that didn't and don't watch much TV now. Thanks again.

reply

Glad you posted that link, supergran. I really enjoyed the dramatisation of Testament of Youth - I must refresh my memory with a look at YouTube.

And of course, Winifred's in it as a character!

Have you seen this link to the 1974 version of "South Riding":

Thanks for that link; alas, it's an ad for the DVD set.

This is a link for a playlist of segmented eps of the 1974 version; parts have been taken down, but the playlist is reasoably complete (and for those of us in the States, where we're unlikely to find a DVD of the 1974 version, it's pretty good):

Thanks for that link (alas, it's an ad for the DVD set), and thanks for prompting me to look on YT for the series itself.

This is a link for the 1st part of the 1st ep; I tried to post a link for the playlist, but the link doesn't work, plus the playlist isn't arranged sequentially. Anyway, the ep segment below will help any interested viewer get started, and as of this moment, all parts of all eps are up.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, supergran, for the link. I've been eager to see "T of Y" since I learned about Winifred Holtby (when the 2011 "South Riding" aired) but didn't think to check YT bc of its original air date. I'm downloading it now. Thanks again.

And a PS, because I too like Cheryl Campbell: She's very good in "The Way We Live Now" (adaptation of Trollope novel), and the production was wonderful:

"WWI. Those are flashbacks."

Are that would explain it. I guess I missed the different timelines.
