She Didn't Know How To Make Herself Throw Up? *Spoiler*

When she was poisoned and she told the guy to go get "something that would make her sick," she could've taken care of it by simply sticking her fingers down her throat. It's not that hard. This was the only part I got really frustrated with.

Agree that it's not hard. But it wasn't that big of a deal.

Wasn't that big of a deal? That was a life-or-death moment. lol

I don't know the medical reason as why you need something that makes you sick, but in "007 - Casino Royale" a poisoned character gulps down (IIRC) a glass of water filled with salt.

So maybe simply sticking your fingers in your throat doesn't causes a strong enough reaction, and part of the poison remains in the "deep" part of your stomach. Something that makes you sick, instead, reaches everywhere and causes your stomach to expel everything.

Having done both...the fingers AND a liquid to make self vomit....the liquid is a different level of vomiting. It racks the whole body and cleans it out thoroughly...both ends...off and on for hours. The fingers just do an immediate, but lighter, vomit process.

Still, seems she would've tried that while waiting for the liquid.

It was done that way so that she could get Tom to show his love for her and fly through the walls and floors to save her instead of being selfish.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

some people have virtually no gag reflex and its very difficult for them to vomit without an aid (like ipecac). not everyone can make themselves throw up with their fingers (i personally cannot).

reply

Most people can if you really try hard and stimulate their gag reflex (it's more effective on other people than self induced), surely it would be the first thing to try under the circumstances?

On the other hand how many people have something in their medicine cupboard that will make you throw up? I know I don't, maybe that's just me.

I'm nausea phobic with no gag reflex and I rarely if ever throw up. If I stick my fingers down my throat I would completely waste my time. Not sure why but my esophagus is too good at keeping food where its supposed to be. Of course this changes when my body detects that I absolutely must throw up because of toxicity. Or if I'm pregnant I'll feel nausea, but won't throw up.

Back in the day, people would often have ipecac in their medicine cabinets, a powerful emetic. They didn't have a poison control center to call, or hospitals close by (especially out in the countryside), so it makes sense the school would have something like that.

Both my parents have mentioned having used ipecac as children (they were born in the early 40s and lived in rural environments). My partner was born in the 50s, in Chicago, and when he was 2, his parents thought he ate a bottle of tasty baby aspirin, and they took him to the local hospital to have his stomach pumped. Large urban city, ipecac in the home was less common at this point.

A lot of people can't make themselves throw up no matter how hard they stick their fingers down their throat. I know I can't.

reply

Same here! My sister can practically think of throwing up and she does (really, just a little poke with her finger). Me? Nope! I've had awful stomach aches and nausea where I know if I could just vomit, I'd feel better. I've tried my fingers, a spoon, a spoon plus thinking of really disgusting vomit-worthy things, with no luck - I just have to wait for it to come naturally.

reply

She was barely conscious at that point and fading fast. I didn't find it odd that she lacked the ability to make herself throw up right then.

reply

The gag reflex may induce vomit but not always and not if the stomach is only lightly filled (a sip of poison will not be ejected). The reflex works on the upper aesophagus and clenches the throat area to defend against "intrusion"; retching is in the abdomen and is sometimes "indidental" to gagging, but not always (ask any ear, nose and throat specialist who pokes a spatula into a patient's mouth routinely).

reply

She's probably tamed her gag reflex by finishing off foot-longs in one bite. For a hotdog eating contest or similar such thing.

Well, I have no gag reflex. It's possible she doesn't either. The only thing that sticking my finger down my throat does is make my throat feel weird.
