Is it just me or did she look like she was going to relax the old-fashioned way in that bathtub?

I actually said it out loud, and my wife asked "what did you say?" And then her hands came back out of the water and I was like "um, nothing dear…."

shareHow so? Gratituous would generally entail splashing around, moaning, back arching, etc. Yes, I'd consider that gratuitous. But seeing as how there are debates even as to what she was doing, I'd say it was pretty discreet.
Oh, perhaps you mean that the very act and positioning of the camera was gratuitous. Again, disagreed. She wasn't just randomly popping off into a closet to pleasure herself. Instead, the director was leading the viewer to believe that another hand would appear under the water as it had outside. We were being led on. What other way would there be to direct our eyes in that direction for such a prolonged length of time? And at what other point would a person be more vulnerable to attack then while touching themselves in private?
The cinematography was actually pretty low-key. I just thought it made essentially no sense in the context of the film, and contributed nothing of value to the story.

Like someone else said, I thought she was worrying about seeing the hand appear again. I fully expected that to happen too, and I think that's what the director was going for with that scene.

Either way, who knows what she was thinking? About Robert saving her? Or her dead lover? Maybe she was remembering other times with him? Or she was just a young woman in the mood?
