This movie tries to do too many things

I thought that this movie had some good ideas separately, like the educated woman who is convinced of science being proved otherwise by a real haunting, or that she finally realises who she is and what the house means to her at the end, or even the exploration of the psychological trauma experience by all the characters after the war, but putting them all together, made the movie feel disjointed to me, and not really hang together stylistically.

I agree, I thought the movie was ok, nice atmosphere but did they really need to jam pack all that in there. Buy the time I was seeing her flash back of the horrible abusive father I was thinking "come on now."

And to add to all that drama, she pretty much got raped by the weird guy with a shotgun. At one point I thought that guy and Robert were working as a team, similar to the "killers" in the early Scream movies.

I love this movie, for all of these reasons. There are not many movies I can watch more than once or twice, if I have to sort something out, but I seem to watch this about once a year almost accidentally. The reason is that I can never remember if I have seen it and I think it is because there is so much in it. But it all comes together for me, except the groundskeeper guy. What was his purpose except for giving Robert someone to hate and for him to do what you have under the spoiler line? He didn't ever figure into the suspense for me. The only use for him, that I could see is that after what he did, Robert provided the big reveal to Florence ..when they were all on the steps. Can you think of any other purpose for him? I'm sorry I am sort of talking in code, I don't want to give spoilers either. :)

That's what I figured, too.
