The relationship with Heather was contrived

I don't think I am being in any way controversial if I state that overweight social outcast males are not usually popular with the female sex. A boy in high school like Terri would seriously struggle to get anywhere socially with any girl, even if the girl were herself at the bottom of the social pyramid, and regardless of any good qualities that the boy himself possessed.

I therefore couldn't take seriously the idea that a very attractive blonde like Heather would be in any way interested in Terri, even if he did go out of his way to help her on multiple occasions, and even if her own behaviour had isolated her from her peers. It just wouldn't happen.

The relationship with Heather helped push the story along, but it wasn't believable and it marred the last third of the film.

I see your point. But if everybody turned their backs on her because of a mistake and there was 1 singular person that still sees her as "good hearted" then that's all she needed. Plus she obviously doesn't make good decisions. And if she sees the value in her sexuality, like most young females, I could see the desire to be desired being more important than who's desiring. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and all that crap. (my opinion is that yeah Terry was a good person but he was way too numb for a movie to be made out of that character. there was just no personality there)

I think you are forgetting two things.

First of all, she was clearly kind of messed up ( maybe from abuse, who knows). The boy she let finger her in class was known as "dirty Johnny" or something like that. He was not a high status guy in the school either.

Secondly, there was a lots of liquor and pills involved. People get beer/drug goggles: I know I have, and others have with me. (I was about an 8 from age 16-25, but in a pinch near bar closing would mess around with a girl who was a 6, and sometimes a drunk 9 would go for me and sheepishly blow me off the next morning.) Her embarrassed note kept it realistic: if she had just become his girlfriend, then I would agree with you.

I disagree, I thought they had great chemistry together

And also, everyone else but him saw her as a 'slut' and he was the only one who truly saw her for what she was (well for what he thought she was at least).

And also she said very clearly that the reason she let that other guy finger her in class was not because 'he was so hot' or anything of the sort but 'because he wanted me' and saying that she just really liked the idea of someone wanting her really bad , in her case it would turn out it was more in a narcissistic self indulgent way.

So while she might not been attracted to Terri (or even the fingering guy for that matter) the fact that he wanted her was enough to seal the deal.

And that is partly why Terri ended up not doing anything with her, because he realised that she didn't want him for him. She just wanted to give herself to him because he wanted her.

As proven by the letter the day after where she wrote for him to not tell anyone about what happened and signing it 'your friend'. And not only that, underlining the 'friend' bit just to really make it clear that she has no interest in him (as anything else except for as a friend, if even that).

We don't have a dog. That was just some really violent sex.
