'Beans on toast? What are you? A Hobo?'

I think it was something like that. Do the makers know that they pissed off the entire English nation with that line? It is a staple part of our diet. Some nice cheese like Cheddar or Red Leicester grated on top and some Worcester Sauce to top it off and you're golden!

That sounds good - gonna give it a go one night - thanks

It's similar here in Australia.

But you realise it's still only a staple for the lower classes, hence the line still fits.

I used to watch the Eastenders until BBC America stupidly quit showing it. People around th square would eat brakfast at the "Caf" cafe. It, the pub and laundromat were gossip centers. Beans on toast were eaten at the caf along with bread "with drippings" which I think is bacon grease.

People at the pub were either pregnant or temporarily on the wagon when they would order an orange squash instead of alcohol. I think that is an orange soft drink loaded with sugar which helps accounts for the bad teeth they all had.

I thought it was a stupid line, but typical of narrowminded classist teenagers. (Or people in general.)

reply

i actually thought it was one of the funnier lines in the movie. i'm sure the writers meant it to be a bit inappropriate. i know about english breakfast... however, it is what hobos eat as well.

reply

What kind of beans do they eat? Are they in a sauce?

What we have here is failure to communicate!

Beanie Weenies for me. Maybe I will try it on toast with cheese next time.

reply

It's not a popular American dish and most associate canned beans with a food you eat while camping or living outdoors (hence a hobo) Nothing against those that eat it, just a cultural difference.

reply

I've never had it, but I would be willing to try it. I wonder why they had this as a staple of his household? (So much so that he was stumped for what to order at the restaurant when they didn't have beans.). I've never seen anyone in the U.S. eating it.
