'Flip' overacting.

I don't know about You guys but I can't take Flip seriously. Shane might told Perry Fitzpatrick do deliver the lines with a macho voice but it feels like he's trying too hard to sound like a bad guy. It sounds like he's reading lines mechanically from a script and I don't find "Flip" relatable as a person like the others on the show.

Agree or disagree?

That tends to be the point of comedy characters ...

op is right, Flip's performance has crossed the line to an unrealistic comic character. Great for an episode of My Family but wrong for this show.

Is there anything about This Is England '86 that you don't moan about needlessly?

And I don't know the actor well enough to know if he's a comic actor or not but it's completely irrelevant; actors can be more than one thing and Perry Fitzpatrick isn't so well-known that he can't branch out into different genres. Aside from which, Jim Carrey is a comic actor but he also did The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Number 23. Likewise, Robert Downey Jr is a dramatic actor but had no problems with appearing in Tropic Thunder. Actors aren't just one thing or another.

And no, Flip isn't an unrealistic comedy character. He says things in an odd macho voice and that's it. Not only is it realistic but it's also appropriate for his character.

Please, for humanity's sake, never write a book or a screenplay. You have no idea what goes into a character.

Sorry Fanboy, forgot that you took these things personally. You're absolutely correct again, me and the op are just imagining things.

Just a word of warning though, try not be as spectacularly irrelevant next time you have a point to argue, others might not be as understanding as me.

Pardon me but I'd sooner take the advice of someone with sensible points to make than a troll. What would be the point in taking your advice?

I see your point but I don't look at it in that way. What I meant about me being unable to take him seriously was that I can't look at him as nothing but an actor. The others play their parts so good I really believe in Turgoose as Shaun, Shim is Milky and Mcclure as Lol etc. Fitzpatrick doesn't make me believe in Flip no matter if he's supposed to be comical or not.

See, I've known boys like that, trying too hard to be the big man. Many a time I've met this people, and I look around thinking, "who are you acting for? Why are you acting like that?"

In a nutshell, some people *do* act up like that, and it's both hilarious and a bit of a shame they feel the need to do that.

Flip's the guy who told Shaun to call the girl a fat cow and punched him in the face afterwards.

Flip is hilarious and serves as comic relief within a show that's fairly depressing as a hole.

He's a parody of the 1980's scooter boy trend. Key word - parody...

Perfectly put solmanquina.

I think he's a brilliant character. I've known a few OTT guys like him too and while it's comical it's also not too much of a stretch from reality too.

His "Engine's off" line was hilarious. Even more so because Woody mimicked him.

I have to side with the OP. I thought the same thing when watching the last episode plus the character Isn't well developed. He comes across as a cardboard villain. That voice the actor puts on is like something out of a cartoon.

reply

Oh my god, it's intentional. How is it too hard to understand? He is a parody.

And yet TIE86 is not a parody so why have one in it, it doesn't blend well with the rest of the series.

Absolutely correct, The-Hand-of-Omega. And yet some people still don't see the problem?

Injecting humour into a story that has dark and serious undertones has always been a trait of Shane Meadows' writing and directing style.

Admittedly Flip is a little over the top, but he is not an entirely unrealistic character. He has provided a couple of brilliant moments in the series, in fairness.

Ronmexicoirl, I agree with your thoughts. I've read people on 'twitter' say that the leader of the motorbike crew is the best thing in '86.

There have been a few groups even set up on facebook to worship Flip.

I think he's a good character and could easily be developed more. Obviously, he doesn't speak in that voice all of the time - unless he has a bad sore throat?!

The scene in episode 1 in the girl's house was a needed moment showing Flip and his friend in more natural mode, pondering the perhaps twee decorations of a modern estate's 'nice manners' - the lace mat underneath the jug etc. To them, they were clearly obsessed with motorbikes and looking 'tough' - or whatever they thought that was.

There is a fine line between comedy and things just being farcial and the bikers do seem to be wearing full-on tracksuits a bit too much. Is this realistic? The costuming overall of all characters is quite far-fetched and too pantomime, that's one gripe. Could have been toned down a bit and made less fashion-show.

Flip is the funniest thing I've seen on TV in years.

He's not supposed to be taken seriously...there's always that one guy who thinks he is so cool and gods gift but the only thing that is hard about him is that bulge in his trackie bottoms (makes me pmsl everytime I see him!) I like the light relief between the dark scenes.
He needs his gang of merry men behind him to back him up but even they know he's not all that with the jimmy/donny osmond joke and them all trying to turn round on their motorbikes. Even katie from corrie thinks he's a bit of a knob!!

I agree. What gets me is that Flip is supposed to be a big, bad, scary leader of a gang of chavs on motorbikes, and the weirdly hammy performance by Fitzpatrick doesn't tally with that at all. It feels more like Flip should be hanging out with the Inbetweeners at Thorpe Park.
