What a let down

It's just had it's first showing on the Sy Fy channel. So disappointing. The special effects were dire.Apart from Kristy Swanson the rest looked as If they
didn't want to be on the set. I really don't know why they made this, as Jaws has so many sequels and this is just a poor attempt at an imitation.

You know what a SyFy movie is, right?

Seemed to me they were trying to cash in on Piranha 3D. They failed miserably. The shark looked like a big cardboard box with a smiley face painted on.

reply

What? Really? You're telling me you didn't expect bad special effects from a SyFy movie?!?

I don't watch TV so, sadly, I am fairly ignorant of their offerings. I don't mind the effects that much and in fact Piranha 3D was just as silly in that department, but the latter had a lot of humour and this was just stoopid.

The best thing about the film was the short running time.

reply

Maybe you missed the part where the shark jumped over a dude free willy style and bit his head off...

"Did you mean for all those words to come out like that or did they just fall out randomly?"-H.H.

reply

OK, I'll give you that one.

reply

You do realize that just because someone makes a shark movie it's not a ripoff of Jaws right? There's a giant list of shark movies, and as far as I know, the only thing this and Jaws have in common is a shark in the water attacking people.

reply

I didn't reference Jaws and neither would I. You should be responding to the OP, not to me.

reply

They put a gas tank in it's mouth and shoot at it to blow it up at the end. Although as we saw, with (intended) comedic results

reply

I think they needed a bigger boat.

I saw the movie last night and it kept reminding me of "Jaws." So, yeah, it's definitely a Jaws rip-off. They even had the "Gator Festival" and the restaurant that couldn't afford to lose business due to a huge, man-eating shark in the waters.

So let me guess according to you, Deep Blue Sea, Shark Attack, 12 days of terror, Deep Blood, Dino Shark, Mako, Megalodon, Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, Open Water, Red Water, Shark in Venice, The Shark Is Still Working, Shark Night, Shark Tale, Sharkwater, and Tiger Shark are all Jaws ripoffs. Seriously? I hate it when people call shark movies ripoffs of Jaws. They're SHARK MOVIES for crying out loud! The only thing in common ANY of these have with Jaws is a shark attacks people, and someone has to kill it, and sometimes no one believes there's a shark right away. The ONLY film that has ripped off of Jaws even close was Piranha. And they even said in the commentary that that was what they were doing.

reply

You're kidding right? Loads of creatures-on-the-loose flicks have borrowed from Jaws in one way or another ever since. You say "Piranha" is the only one? Please. Check out a 1977 tv film called "Snowbeast." It took the whole basic plot of Jaws and transferred it to a Colorado ski resort and the Bigfoot creature that was terrorizing it.

In my previous post I explained to you that I actually saw things in "Swamp Shark" that directly reminded me of Jaws, e.g. the "Gator festival" and restaurant that couldn't afford to shut down because of the colossal man-eating shark terrorizing the area. Or how about when the shark is first clearly seen where all you see is its snout, teeth & eye coming out of the water -- Jaws.

I'm not saying it's exactly like Jaws; "Swamp Shark" has its own plot, but elements were clearly inspired by Jaws, which is the nature-runs-amok fountainhead of cinema.

reply

Sorry to tell you this one, but "The Shark Is Still Working" isn't a feature film/movie, it is actually a documentary about the making of Jaws and the impact it had.

Nothing else in common with Jaws?

A irresponsible or duplicitours local authority ignoring/covering up the danger? CHECK Jaws)

A shark scarred by fire/explosion on the side of its mouth? CHECK Jaws 2

A shot of a shark rising out of the water and snapping the tow line between two boats, one of them stricken? CHECK Jaws2

A shark terrorising a waterside tourist atrraction on its opening day? CHECK Jaws 3

A shot of a group of people trying haul someone onto the side of a boat as the shark bears down on them? CHECK Jaws 2

And finally

Attempting to destroy the shark by shooting at a gas or oxygen tank in its mouth. (Unsuccesfully in this case) CHECK!!!! Jaws

There were more scenes, some of those reminded me of a Jaws episode, some are obviously ripped-off:

Kids right in the beginning sitting on the beach, partying and one is playing the hramonica? Check Jaws 1

Bridge over a pond (I know far fetched but the bridge looked very similar to the famous one in Jaws 1 and 2!)? Check Jaws 1 and 2

Person going to a boat trip even though he (in this case she) shouldn´t and they get attacked? Check Jaws 2

Guy on a wooden walkway over the water falling down into it because of the shark? Check Jaws 1

Couple in a small boat apart from the main group getting attacked by the shark? Check Jaws 2

A guy finding a piece of a boat in the water with a body hidden after turning it around and being scared like **** (pretty much the same scene from a Jaws movie!!)? Check Jaws 2

Bringing some to the morgue to prove the dead person was attacked by a big shark? Check Jaws 1 and 3

Someone destroying communication systems to prevent the other one to call for help? Check Jaws 1

Rope taken by shakr and running through someones finger and also strangeling someone? Check Jaws 1

Shouting at the shark "You son of a b*tch" (sorry, still reminded me of Jaws)? Check Jaws 1

Someone going with a boat onto a populated beach? Check Jaws 3

this already was on??? i thought it premiered in june?

reply

I really like the restaurant, though. It was the best thing about the film.

"Swamp Shark"! The title begs to be shouted; and with a straight face. Looks like my type of flick, encouraging one and all to suspend disbelief.

reply

Kinda like "Mega Piranha!!!!" If Swamp Shark is anywhere near as fantastically ludicrous as Mega Piranha, I will enjoy it immensely.

Hmmmm...maybe I should have a viewing party for it?

It felt a lot like Red Water. All it needed was Coolio and Lou Diamond Philips. Everything else was there.

Hard to get thru... I get surfing the net while watching..... that's not a good sign.

How do movies get Davi/ DB Sweeney/ Kristy Swanson when they are much better than the movie itself.

Swanson was A list at one point... Sweeney was at least in Theatrical releases for awhile. Cutting edge was the first movie I saw him in and he was great it that.

Davi was the king of B movies but not C/D movies like this...he's too good for it.

Pays the bills. Michael Caine says he's never seen Jaws 4, The Revenge, but he enjoys living in the house the salary from the movie allowed him to buy.

dang, you're so right ... when i turned on to syfy this evening to see it, i really was expecting quality akin to Gone with the Wind or Casablanca. i'm really shocked. (*sarcasm font*)
