This show has already lost all credibility...

As far as I know (and I was alive back then) there were no tazers in 1986.

The Taser was first marketed in 1974. It has been through several changes and models since then.

In 1970, Jack Cover formed Taser Systems, Inc., named for the Tom Swift novels. Because the Taser used gunpowder to launch the darts, the federal government considered it a firearm, a classification that ruled out a civilian market and also discouraged police and military sales.[1]

wrong.

reply

Ok, maybe they were "invented" by then, but they certainly weren't being used in the mainstream by police in 1986, and the police definitely weren't saying the phase "I'm going to TAZE you". Just saying...

reply

lol seriously?

reply

I wondered about the same thing. Back then, I don't remember tasers being used or the word "taze," either.

reply

Second that...

Even though I was just born in '84....it just didn't sound natural. Very contemporary. Of all the 80s shows and movies I've watched, I never recalled that ever being said or used as a point of reference.

peace.love.happiness.

reply

Wow! Because they use a taser the show is no good?... C'mon.

reply

I was at university during this era of the 80s, definitely there were no tasers used... This show is no good because it's not funny & it's poorly written imho. Actors need work, bills need to be paid so I forgive the cast for taking part in this dreck.

reply

Also they said they were psyched about something. Psyched wasnt a term back then, was it? I think it is more 90s

I'm pretty sure it was a cattle prod that he used. They're used on cattle to make them move where you want them to go and to stop where you want them to stop. We had a few that all looked just like the one used on the show since the early 80's.

On another note, there are lots of things that aren't true to the time period, and I think it's intentional. Look at their clothes and hair. Most look nothing like 1986.

reply

People will find any reason to drag things down, its just an obvious troll.

reply

Umm this show sucks because in 1986 there weren't any shows about college freshmen rushing a fraternity. What could they have been thinking, utter dreck.

WoW. Sit down, suspend your disbelief for an hour and enjoy a really good show.
...You know you really can enjoy alot more when your undies aren't so tight.

Are you people serious? Let me rephrase that: I know some of you are being sarcastic, but those of you who are serious need to chill. The point of the whole show is to be funny. It's not supposed to be a Brief History of the Late 1980's. If there are certain historical inaccuracies it doesn't ruin the series. Just watch it and have fun with a cheap source of humor that tries to bring a bit of nostalgia with it.

reply

Well it kinda does ruin it. The fact is they deliberately set this show in the 80's. Therefore it should be historically accurate to that period. Otherwise it's really not set in the 80's. Hence ruined.

The cop used a cattle prod, a baton loaded with D-cells with electrical shock contacts on the end. I'm sure the use of the word taser was because many of today's kids are more familiar with a taser. You would probably be one of that demographic. Relax and enjoy the plot, stop looking for flaws. There aren't many at all. I was a freshman in 1986, I can assure you the accuracy is eerily on spot.

My only complaint is that the explosion in high-grade hybrid marijuana didn't proliferate until '88. Until then, there were pure breeds and Sativa. I could be wrong. Acupulco Gold, Maui Wowie, Thai Stick, California & Mexican Gold, and very few variances on Sativas (which was 97% of all the weed in the 80's). Nobody had anything close to the weed you'd see on a High Times cover. Now you can score it everywhere.
