Isn't he dead?

Near the middle of the game I think you find out the character you are playing inside the suit has massive injuries.

Is the guy actually dead but the suit is what is actually alive and absorbed his life force or whatever?

I think it's addressed in Crysis 3.

I'd love to know how the old codger figured this out back in 1908
