Max seemed kinda evil...

That scene where he led Jacob to believe his son was alive and then presents his corpse to him and watched gleefully as this man is in pain - what the hell? Jacob seemed to be a much better person than Max.

In that scene, he starts smirking but stops when he sees that Jacob is really hurting. He had imagined him some kind of monster who'd use his son and let him die as part of some plot. During that scene is when he realizes that Jacob is human. I wouldn't say Jacob's a better person. Max just had a blind spot where he was concerned because of their past. The fact that he lets him go at the end shows that he's come around.
