Animated version of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns in the works

Reported by Brendon Connelly at Bleeding Cool:

It’s going to get rather crowded out there, with alternative Batmen cropping up left, right and centre. We’ll barely be over Christian Bale* when a reboot will see another lucky young man dropped into the role, and there are plans for another, different Bats to appear in a Justice League feature. Add to this the various animated Batmen, from Kevin Conroy, Diedrich Bader and Bruce Greenwood.

Too much Batman? Or never enough?

Well, I think there’s always going to be room for The Dark Knight Returns, don’t you?

Bleeding Cool have heard from multiple sources (enough with the multiples already) that work is underway on a movie adaptation of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's classic The Dark Knight Returns. As you might have guessed, however, this is to be an animated adaptation, much like the recent All-Star Superman or in-the-works Year One.

Fittingly, Year One will come along first, but DKR is already in the early stages of development. According to our sources, several veterans of Batman toons past will be on the crew list, though we’re still trying to confirm who is writing and directing the film.

It would be sheer guesswork to try and determine when this might make it to the screen, but it isn’t going to be anytime soon. Here’s hoping they do it right.

Which doesn’t necessarily mean with a dry, determined insistence on copying Miller’s pages…

Is it too late to suggest Adam West in the role?

*Some people have been over him for years, to be fair.

I am thrilled!

This should be darn good, but it's sad how safe the awesome talent involved in these movies is playing it. You can't blame the execs for wanting the more lucrative franchises like Batman and Justice League to hit the screen, especially considering how little money even those make. I'd still argue that the best movie they've made so far was Wonder Woman and that they could hit those Aquaman and Batgirl projects out of the park.

Ah well, at least Batman and JL are still darn fun to watch.

Remove an epic battle with Superman?! I would as soon ADD Superman to Nolan's existing franchise! DKReturns is a fantasy of epic proportions, with humanoid creatures, cameos from other superheroes, etc.

I think a Nolan related feature film (rather than a collection of stories) wouldn't be too inappropriate.

With the usual 70-minute animated running times? God no! I'd rather see it as some sort of mini-series in four parts. To truncate it to a little over an hour running time is ludicrous.

Very well said. Do it like the way Miller wrote it, the four issues. I do hope they don't screw it up. I really liked the GN.

But I hated the sequel Miller wrote(The Dark Knight Strikes Back). What do you guys think?

The worst thing about DKR is how Superman character was multiplied by Miller to suit his purpose.

Hated the comic(actually one of the worst ive ever read) but I said the same thing about All Star superman and that ended up being kind of ok. I just wish they would focus on the titles that can't be live action

There is no evidence the Batman of the proposed JLA wouldn be different from the "Reboot" which is an abuse of that them anyway.

DKR I cannot accept being crammed into this 75 Minute time limit dela, that takes it to far. If DC wanted to bring that into it then it requires the respect to give it the full attention it deserves.
