The movie as a metaphor for Russia wanting Ukraine?

Milla is a Russian speaking woman of Ukrainian ancestry, so that part immediately works. From the trailer I see that her initial fiancee was rude, boorish, a klutz, and someone who didn't appreciate her. So, he would represent the European Union.

Kolotilov is Russia, a totally innocent party who gets harmed by the rush of Ukraine/Milla and her fiancee/The European Union to leap into an ill fated marriage.

The movie shows that Milla's character and Kolotilov are meant to be with each other but the world keeps throwing obstacles at his making it to the wedding. This could be a metaphor for Russia saying "Be patient, we know you want this to happen; we're trying as hard as we can!".

I'm a huge fan of Milla and I'm sure she didn't read the script this way. Only recent events expose the possibility of my theory having any merit.

There's no mention that Milla's character is Ukrainian. But if you want to make this connection in a movie from 2010, you should also know that Milla doesn't have Ukrainian ancestry. She was born to a Russian mother ("accidentally" an actress who plays the mother of Milla's character in this film) and a Serbian father in a city that was part of the USSR. But either way, her family moved to the States when she was just 5 years old, so she's almost 100% American.

Also if you're looking at ancestries, keep in mind that Khabenskiy (Kolotilov) has Jewish, not Russian roots, and he usually portrays either Jews or Ukrainians in his movies (since he doesn't look Russian). So it's more likely that HIS character is Ukrainian, not Milla's.

Also the film was directed by a Georgian director from Georgia, written by some unknown screenwriter (let's suppose Russian) and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, who is a Kazakh from Kazakhstan. So this is either some overcomplicated international plot, or just a cliched story that was reused in romcoms millions of times :)
