Assistant Principal Responds

Reviewers have described East Middle School Assistant Principal Kim Lockwood as the "pseudo-villain" of the documentary. Frequently, audience members gasp or groan during scenes in which Lockwood tries to negotiate a handshake between a bully and his reluctant victim, or, while meeting with Libby's parents, downplays the possibility that he's being bullied.

After a free screening of Bully in November at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Sioux City, attended by 1,700 people, Lockwood stood up and delivered what many described as a public apology.

"It's been hell," she said of the aftermath.

Hate mail has streamed in.

She hasn't spoken to the Bully filmmakers since the film's premiere, she said.

"If I end up dead, they'll have to live with it."

Wow...I didn't think I could get loose any more respect for this woman. Not only does she seem to take responsibility for her actions but she tries to make the filmmakers feel guilty? I truly hope this film will get her fired.

"Hate mail has streamed in."

Maybe she should just shake their hands.

reply

I love brevity mingled with intelligence and wit. A perfect response.

Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.

That article was published in Spring of 2012, she was actually since promoted to a Principle, not just Vice Principle anymore. That happens when you are operating in areas where they promote women just to earn diversity points for the Superintendent.

reply

Her lack of ability to do her job has nothing to do with her being a woman. Incompetent men are promoted all the time too - more so as a matter of fact, than women.

reply

Come on, you must be aware that people who are undeserving or incapable or both get kicked upwards sometimes, and that's been the case probably since time immemorial. It happens with both genders. And why the hell not? It's only relatively recently that women even had the opportunity to be working at all. All those decades, men didn't have to worry about getting fired because they got married, but that was official policy for many women, and certainly for school teachers all around the USA. Ridiculous policy, but there it was.

It's interesting how the same people outraged about bullying of these kids then engage in bullying of this woman.
She appeared to handle things badly, but I also know this was a movie and that it was heavily edited at parts. We don't know the full story, so it would be wrong to make such extreme judgments about her.

reply

100% agree with your statement. I don't think her actions were hateful, I just think she was misguided and we all know documentaries can edit to paint an unfair picture. Hopefully she can learn from her portrayal and assist future children better going forward.

reply

Sorry I was only halfway through. This woman is taking no responsibility at all. Good lord. She really is incompetent.

reply

Exactly. She strikes me as being the type to having been or still is a bully. Think about it. She refuses to take responsibility, blames others for her own mistakes (bullies often blame the victims because "they are weird/stupid/ugly/etc"), basically berated the kid for not doing something she was trying to force upon him, etc. Either way, she's immature and a tool.
