Swimming pool

In the swimming pool, Roman is first seen swimming with the others. Next time he's in the pool we see the others shy away from him.

What was the reason they suddenly did not want to be in the same pool with the boy?

I though it maybe had something to do with him working with dead bodies. Perhaps the other boys are weirded out by this?

reply

I think you're right. Other kids and the guards make numerous sneering comments about his profession. This was the part of the film that didn't ring true for me. I could understand if Roman simply perceived the other boys as rejecting him, as rejection had been embedded in him from an early age. But the idea that they literally won't go near him seems a bit overblown and silly.

at first I thought it was that he worked with dead bodies but I think it's because he kept seeing that diving advertisement and wanted to dive instead of fart around and play polo like the other kids, you can't get your dive on with a bunch of morons in the pool

Bold urban flavor? Please. That boy’s from Barbados. His father’s a cardiologist.

reply

Yes, I think it was so he could swim laps. They all had to share the pool, so the polo team had to give him his opportunity to exercise before they could take over.

I thought Roman was separated because of the type of juvenile offender he was, i.e. sentenced for murder/manslaughter. The boys seemed to me slightly afraid/wary of him.
