How Violent/Disturbing is this film?

I can sit through disturbing, but soon as a film gets overly gorey I lose interest. I understand it's not like other films where they use violence to entertain (that's what bothers me more than anything), but how violent is this, I just wana know if I can stomach it.

What films would you compare it to violent/disturbing nature-wise? On a scale of 1-10, how violent is this, and maybe also include another film's 'violence rating' just so I have a comparison.

If most of the violence is off-screen, I'll have no problem, and I can survive animal cruelty, it's just when it's extremely graphic on-screen, I'm not big on it..

Cheers!

Certainly disturbing but only brief scenes of torture. Very well made. No more vioent than Reservoir Dogs but this is not gratuitous - completely in good context. Less violent/graphic than Schindlers List. Does that help?

reply

Oh, so not that bad at all, really. Here I was thinking it was going to be like the level of violence in Lars Van-Trier's Anti-Christ or something.

I finally saw Antichrist and was shocked at how bored I was with it. I was expecting some soul shattering horror, but was just kind of underwhelmed by it. I felt Breaking the Waves was a much more traumatic and depressing film experience

All movies are different, but there is a toe torture scene and a strangling scene which are pretty disturbing. A dog gets shot off scene which I didnt find very disturbing, but distasteful. It depends what disturbs you. I would say its a 8 for violence, lots of violence if off screen but there are a few scenes that you see a bit.

That's a fair question. I mean I've seen thousands of films, including a lot of "challenging" cinema even most big film buffs wouldn't be able to handle. And I felt because of a number of reasons(cinematography/acting/sound design/tone/etc)
Snowtown is one of the more jarring films Ive seen. There's only one particularly brutal scene that's rather horrific to watch(the tub scene), and then there's a scene where they hack up kangaroos. But it's not so much the couple of gory/violent scenes, but the menacing feel certain scenes imply. Like when they visit this mentally challenged guy's house, there's just this really nasty feeling you get even though it doesn't show anything. There's a lot of restraint in this film, as Im not sure I could have handled any more violence or gore in it

A film like Drive is particularly brutal for an American hollywood film, but its so stylized that its hard to be too effected by it. By contrast the few jarring scenes in Irreversible are to me much more horrific due to the out of nowhere matter of fact way it's presented. Even some of the most controversial films with rather brutal scenes get too caught up in stylization to be truly effecting(Serbian Film comes to mind) Natural Born Killers is rather violent, especially the uncut version...but again its so cartoony and over the top its not very disturbing.

So aside from the kangaroo and tub scene, it's really just an overall sense of menacing dread that's the most disturbing aspect in my view.

^I find that strange that you walked out on the film for being too disturbing/depressing. I've avoided Solo & Irreversible for basically being too gruesome, or disturbing.

I was expecting this to be quite gruesome, but generally it wasn't too bad. One part I couldn't watch was the toe nails thing.. Other than that it wasn't really too gruesome. Disturbing? Yes, but I found it bareable. Especially considering how realistic and well handled the whole film was.

This all being said, I doubt I'll watch it again. I don't feel any need to.

Yes, there is a difference between a film being disturbing and gory/violent.

In some "gory" films like Hostel or Saw, I did not find them very disturbing because of the way to film was directed. The tone of the film did not match the violence.

In this film however, the tone was so dark and disturbing that even though the violence was not necessarily as gory, it was far more effective.

Yeah?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah?
There's a thesaurus in the library. Yeah is under "Y".

Deeply disturbing only violent like on screen in a few parts but when it is it's disgusting

This film has very little violence, but even if it contained no violence at all, it would still be the most disturbing movie I've seen in my adult life.

VERY disturbing. VERY realistic. The toe scene, the bathtub scene, and they cut up REAL (already dead) kangaroos ON SCREEN. Also a pretty graphic brother on brother rape scene. All seriously REALISTIC!!!!

And if you read up on the details of the real-life case, you'll find that even more disturbing.
