That's improper grammar (would of) and you're a better person for not using it.
As for the hyphen, it could 'have' (note the have) been a comma. But I felt the message got across pretty clearly with the "-".

That is EXACTLY the way I used the dash.
English can be befuddling at times. Easy way to see that I used a dash is I clearly had spaces on either side (thus I was not gluing words together).
If I were gluing words together, I would not have put spaces on either side of the dash (and it would've been a hyphen).
