Great movie, got a few questions

First of all a huge salute to the folks over at the May forums for referring to this movie!

I only got to know of Alyce a few weeks ago and already I've rewatched it several times.

There are a couple of things that I've been wondering about or that are either vague or unanswered in the movie, and I'd be interested in hearing thoughts from other fans.

- Why didn't Alyce just tell the truth? The moment she found out Carroll fell off the roof she could have just rushed down and explain what happened.
- Why go out with Kurt? I had expected her to kill him, which would be kind of pointless, but so was the short lasting date. And he did punch her in the face, twice..
- In what city was the movie supposed to take place in?

Many thanks!
A.J.

Hopefully I can help. I'm coming at this in modesty, not a knowitall jerkoff like IMDB is wont to have-these are just my thoughts.

Why didn't Alyce just tell the truth?

Death does weird things to people. Being the sole witness to a death can do even weirder things. Everyone reacts differently. From what I can tell, Alyce felt culpable in Caroll's death and (at that point in the story) didn't want to be directly associated with it. She feared what Caroll's father actually did at the funeral-blame her for it.

she could have just rushed down and explain what happened

If she did, we wouldn't have a movie. That's how the story starts. People as of late tend to expect rationality in an absolute form in film-but rational decisions are subjective in real life as well as movies. It's a hard thing to let go of, but sometimes you've gotta let it go, unless it's absolutely inexcusable, or obscenely cliche.

Why go out with Kurt?

After a traumatic or psychologically shattering event, people often turn to erratic or escapist behavior. In the case of Kurt, it's simple. Alyce was still trying to find out (thanks to the drug dealer's aptly sage council) how to regain power over herself. She made the same decision I did a while back-to *beep* it out of people. It was an experiment in exploiting the vulnerability of others. Watch the scene again with this in mind. I've got to say that part hit home with me pretty hard.

I had expected her to kill him
Yeah me too. I was rather relieved when she didn't, because she'd be falling into the same cliche that she was trying desperately to avoid.

And he did punch her in the face, twice..

Man oh man those hits looked painful. It was almost comical, actually. Alyce herself laughed at it a little. Even still-killing a meathead was pointless. He was completely owned in the literal definition of the word, and his hyper-masculine pride was completely ruined. For the Kurt-ain Rod, that's undoubtedly a fate worse than death.

In what city was the movie supposed to take place in?

I don't think it matters that much, to be honest. I didn't take a look to see where it was shot-and there were only a few exteriors. It doesn't seem too relevant in a story this size. The story isn't really about that.

Anyway, I hope that helps and I didn't TL;DR you. Enjoy another viewing!

Cheers

Thanks, that all made perfect sense :-)

The license plate has red on top, white in the middle and blue on bottom. Which would resemble Idaho or Ohio. The topography is hilly, with apparently a few dance clubs, and I would say a Midwestern accent.

So, I'm going to go with Cincinnati.

But.....her drivers license is California, so yeah...

In a low budget film, the licenses and plates are something you've just got to ignore most times. That's a detail that's kind of a lot of effort to deal with, and costs money-which there isn't a whole lot of. You've just gotta go and hope it's not noticed.

The first time she just makes believe she's going to push her off the roof, but the second time, she's visibly disturbed about being called a wet vagina.
She definitely has strong lesbian feelings towards the heterosexual Carroll, but has been rejected a number of times, and now the wet vagina song reminds her of this, and the drugs and wine have taken away her impulse control and inhibitions, so she loses control for a second and pushes her off.
She knows this would come out in court, so she knows that she's guilty, and won't even admit to being up on the roof when it happened.
I'm not sure if the suffocation scene in the hospital was real or a dream, because she wakes up from bed immediately after.
They mention North Hollywood in the first part of the flick, so it probably takes place there.

It says it was filmed in Echo Park, CA. Echo Park is basically downtown Los Angeles.
