I applaud their decision. For a while now, I've become aware of how toxic this place is.

I'm not sure if you're continuing the joke or genuinely are happy the boards are shutting down, but in case of the latter, I'd just like to say I'm not, I'll miss these places. If someone thinks they're that bad they can stop coming to them.

I'm actually serious. I still get a small amount enjoyment coming here, but as I find more trolls dominating more boards and threads, I'm enjoying it less and less. You are someone whose posts will be missed because they are thoughtful and on the topic of the movies and, even when I don't quite agree with you, I enjoy hearing your opinion. But posters like you are far and few between and, in some boards, anyone with anything reasonable to talk about cannot get a toe hold.

If it interests you, someone has started their own version of IMDB for the main boards
http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000002/thread/265735628 I was turned off at first when, upon scrolling down I saw 'libtards' in the title of one of the posts, but I can't find it now, so maybe the moderation there is good. Some people are also suggesting reddit or facebook for movie/media discussions.

Oh, well that's very nice of you. 😳 It's been nice seeing your posts, too.

To be honest a large part of why I enjoy this place so much has nothing to do with interacting with people. It's nice knowing that after I watch something, if I have some thoughts bouncing around in my head, I can get the thoughts out by making a thread for it on the dedicated board. Not that I don't enjoy reading other people's comments and getting responses to what I put down, though. It's also nice to have somewhere to read a bit of talk about the movie afterwards, when I'm in the mood for something related to said movie. The trolls don't bother me much, I just kind of ignore them. That might be easier (might not matter, I don't know) because I don't think I've ever gotten a response from a troll.

Eh, I'm already part of movie forums that I can go to just for general movie discussion. I think that IMDB2 thing is missing the fact that a large part of what made this place so enjoyable was the fact that you had somewhere specific for every movie. I'm also already on Reddit, but they don't bump things with new posts to the top, and not everything's going to have its own board. And I just don't like Facebook (I'm not on it). Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Yes, there is an air of haughtiness and in-your-face put-downedness to a lot of what gets posted here, but the majority of it is directed at sucky movies, or opinions of said movies, and not particularly personally directed at other users. And the stuff that is can be readily spotted and filtered out. And there are far worse forums where the mods back the flamers and troll-regulars by banning you for defending your opinions.

No, the decision to shut down IMDB forums has much more to do with the fact that these forums are a place for finding validation for one's own opinions in the security of anonymity, for example hating a movie that "critics" decided is gem (e.g., The Revenant) or that the PC media has christened for "official re-education (e.g., Free State of Jones / Hidden Figures).

Do not kid yourself if you think these forums are going away because they cost maintaining a few lines of paltry code and serving some text files is more than an ant's fart to Amazon. More to the point, the people who run Amazon, and the people who want to bully the rest of the world into parroting their PC views have decided that, not satisfied with bastardizing free speech when spoken - by demonizing people who speak their minds candidly - by that the virtual forum has become the sanctuary of the Neanderthal white male and must be shut down.

Very sad stuff. And a good reason why I won't be buying anything from Amazon in the near future. And why I don't even visit the Washington Post site any more.
