WHY IS THIS SO HIGH?

You people of imdb...sometimes....
8.6? I love the movie but this is not the rating it deserves. Upon reflection, its a pretty kitschy drama. It is well written and has excellent acting by the two main leads but it doesn't deserve the spot it has right now. Its emotional and all but guys, that doesn't make the movie a "masterpiece". Its a well made drama, no more no less. Film wise its very generic and kinda corny. Some people are too easily impressed

reply

It is well loved because its (oddly enough) one of the most mainstream movies to come out of France the last few years.

reply

I think that's the real reason too. In reality it's a sappy and corny feel good movie with very little of actual substance to it. It reminds me of those made for TV holiday movies where you know where's going, and the whole point is to reaffirm how amazing life is every day. Which is a fine message, but when the delivery system of it is so cliche, ham fisted, and over the top in its attempt at emotional manipulation, the message takes a back seat to your brain saying 'god this is corny, stop trying to force me to feel a certain way!'

But, it's a french movie withot Luc Besson's name attached, so here we are..

I agree with your assessment 100%!!!

reply

It's a really average, forgettable movie. Nice enough but I can't believe it's rated so highly, in reality it doesn't deserve to even be close to the top 250. I wish there was some way of IMDB reviewing the votes.

With 8.8 million moviegoers, this was the most successful film in Germany in 2012 (beating the likes of Skyfall (2012), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (2012). It is the most successful French film in German cinema history.

So? Since when does success make something good? Is twilight good because it was succesful? Is nicky minaj a good musician because she has billion of views? Kind of an stupid argument.

reply

Real question is why are so you so jealous of this film's success, what part of you does it offend? "Some people are just too easily impressed." In this case wouldn't "some" people be the majority of people? Maybe you're the one who should be placing yourself in a separate special category who just can't see how other white people can enjoy racial agenda films right?

So easy to find you guys on the internet these days.

I just finished watching this film five minutes ago. I mainly saw it to see what all they hype was about.

Having said that, I absolutely loved it. More than I thought I would. I enjoyed the banter between the two leads and the countless comedic moments spread throughout. I've seen François Cluzet in a number of films but he was at his best in this one.

It's also a based on a true story.

Imagine this story being played in real life. I'm sure there would be some different details but imagine the beauty of it: two very different personalities meeting and caring for each other, not even being a love story.

Gotta admit, it deflects from the average hollywood plots.

reply

It is based on a true story but there are still some things that they put in the movie for dramatic reasons. I'd say "Driving miss daisy" is almost the same movie, a black chauffeur becomes friends with an rich old jewish lady, who also has no friends. I still prefer "intouchable", but in terms of story they are pretty alike.

reply

I feel like yes it is kind of just a feel good movie, but it's also a bit more than that, it's like the feel good movie style perfected. It is just so brilliantly shot and put together that as a cinematography guy I can't help but love it.

reply

I gave it 7/10. If I was in a wheelchair or had a disabled relative I would probably give it a 9/10. Hence the 8.6
Thats my theory...

If a bunch of Christopher Nolan's overly-theatrical melodrama-for-the-masses fluff, cloying ( and corny ) superhero mediocrity, and Pixar pap for kids can enjoy spots in the top 250 and high ratings on imdb,........then so can this movie. It deserves its place.

SPIRAL OUT!........KEEP GOING!

Very funny Sextamental, very funny.

And when it comes to animation, you prefer the adult kind like Akira and Ninja Scroll?

reply

Some of that Pixar pap is as exceptional as some of the Studio Ghibli stuff so shove that up your pretentiousness. If you also think the films like Spirirted Away should also not be in the top 250 then you simply have an inability to appreciate animation which has just as much to offer as live action.
