Future Oscar Darling?

Looks like it!

Don't think so. Von Trotta doesn't have a past record of getting her movies anywhere near Oscar (unlike her ex-hubbie) and Germany is submitting "Two Lives" for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Whenever "Hannah Arendt" will get a proper eligibility release in the US, it will be for the major categories and we all now that foreign-language films are a tough sell with the Academy.

But.. I think the movie should do well at the upcoming European Film Awards, which announce their noms this week. Sukowa got two noms back in the 90's, maybe it's her time to win. I wonder which movies will perform well at this year's EFAs. Two of the most talked about titles of the season, "Le Passé" (non-European director) and "La Vie d'Adèle" (don't remember the reason) are uneligible, so what does this leave? Probably "The Great Beauty" and "Blancanieves".

So, "La Vie d'Adèle" was eligible after all.. I was confused when I hadn't seen it in the submissions list, considering that the EFAs site stated that any movie that had received any kind of European release before the end of July (festival premieres included) would have been eligible. Why not the Golden Palm winner? Maybe its absence from the list was just the result of a keystroke. So, it was nominated for Best Film and Best Director, but Adèle and Léa were snubbed? That's criminal! Anyway, Sukowa was nominated (as I thought she would) and I'm sticking to her for the win more than ever now (unless the 5 noms for the "Broken Circle Breakdown" want to tell us that it will enjoy a very big night..)
