Why

It seems that they like to use the word "why" to deliberately antagonize their customers. For example, a customer brings in an item, they ask them how much they want, the customer tells them and suddenly they become wide eyed and say "why"??? They could simply say that they can't pay so much money or something along those lines, but just staring at the customer and saying "Why" is for the benefit of the camera and very rude..

Pawn Stars at least says something like "What made you come up with that figure", usually followed by the person saying that the item they have is on Ebay for 'X' amount, (though not often SELLING at that).

Yeah I've always thought that was rude. Or when les says " how much will you really take for this"

Yeah, the guy asks his price.
Then Les or whoever will say "How much will you really take?".
Then Les will offer him about 1/10 that amount. He uses the least amount that the guy will take as a starting point for negotiations. So remember that if you ever go in there, lol.

I can't really get upset about it, because this is the way the business works. But there are only so many negotiating tactics, and we end up seeing the same ones over and over, and it kind of grates on the nerves. The guys on Pawn Stars at least treat the customers with more respect.

I'm not sure why I keep watching this show, really. It's kind of like seeing a car accident, it's a wreck but it's hard to look away.

Its all about leverage in negotiations. The pawn shop has all the leverage and uses it to their advantage. Very rarely do they have to cave to your demands.
