Da Brigham

In the opening credits, why does the narrator refer to B&W Hospital as "da Brigham?"

reply

Well, he says "The Brigham", and that is the way most people around here refer to it. It is a hosptial that is the end result of a number of mergers. Boston Lying-In, which was a maternity hospital for women who couldn't afford to have their babies at home (times have changed!) and the Free Hospital for Women, eventually became the Boston Hospital for Women.

The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, which was for indigent folks, and the Robert Breck Brigham, which was for people with arthritis and joint diseases.

In 1974, the three hospitals formally affiliated, and 6 years later unveiled the name Brigham and Women's Hospital. And most people call it "The Brigham".

Before Beth Israel and The Deaconess merged, everyone called it "The Deke".
