Why was the Viet Cong scene deleted from the US release?

From its description on other threads here that scene seems pivotal. Was anything else deleted? The wikipedia article says the US release version is 5 minutes shorter. Has anyone seen that scene on youtube or seen a written comparison of the two versions with pictures?

My own speculation is that it's because the scene very briefly includes them singing "Sadie the Cleaning Lady". It was an Australian record and my hunch is that they failed to obtain worldwide distribution rights to the song. I saw it at the movie theater in Sydney when it first came out and on an Australian DVD - the scene was there in both cases. Without rights to the song, it was probably easier to cut the scene to avoid legal troubles.

Again, that's just my speculation. I can't think of any artistic reason not to use the scene in world wide distribution.
