4 years later I just got something. When Aro delights when he hears

Renesme's little heart. I now get why that is so significant. It took me 4 years.

He has probably not heard a heartbeat for hundreds of years in someone like her.

Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.
Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?

I'm not sure about that - In Eclipse all those tourists are brought in (some children) to the Volturi's lair - Maybe Renesmee has a unique heartbeat all her own (?)

Yes. Renesmee's heartbeat strums much faster than a normal humans. IIRC, I think it's compared to a hummingbird's heart rate/beat? I can't recall if the shifters' hearts beat faster than normal though. Renesmee & the Wolves have the same number of chromosomes, so maybe her heart beats the same rhythm as theirs?  Or maybe it beats faster?

Renesmee is the first vampire/human hybrid Aro has ever met, or even knew of, so her heartbeat astonishes him.

Renesmee's heart does beat much faster than a humans and was mentioned several times throughout Breaking Dawn. In Breaking Dawn, Kate or Carmen asked Edward what that thrumming sound was coming from the other room -- just prior to Edward and Bella introducing Remesmee to the Denali clan for the very first time. The hummingbird reference, however, was Edward referring to Bella's rapid heart-rate, when she was trying to get up the courage to let Edward know she wanted physical intimacy with him prior to her vampire transformation. From Eclipse:

"I struggled, trying to find exactly the right words to open with.

'Listen to your heart fly,' he murmured, 'It's fluttering like a hummingbird's wings. Are you all right?'

'I'm great.'

'Please go on then,' he encouraged."

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

Ah. I knew there was a hummingbird mention somewhere. Thanks. It has been a couple of years since I've read the books, guess it's time for another book reading marathon.

Aro had never met, nor was aware that there were vampire/human hybrids. Renesmee was his first experience, and Nahuel was his second.
