The Independent Woman (episode one)

This documentary series has some potential, but I thought some of the point of
the series was to provide contrasting views. There was surprisingly little of that;
there were no surprises and no controversy.

And there was a little much on The Good Wife at the beginning.

I would also point out that the lack of African-American women in the character examination was a bit glaring.
The show living single was a great example of independent women. I was sure they would have Mrs. Huxtable at least since it was one of the more popular shows in primtime. I wonder if the next installment will have no examples of African-American men.

Excellent point. I just checked the cast list for this program and neither Bill Cosby nor Phylicia Rashad were listed. The show did interview Shonda Rhimes (producer/writer for Grey's Anatomy) who appeared on last night's program and Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) who will appear on a future program. But Cosby was a big, ground-breaking show. Rashad would have been a perfect person to interview for The Independent Woman.

I don't know why they did not interview Bill Cosby or Phylicia Rashad, however they did make a huge point in episode 1 that the Cosby Show returned Dad to the "boss" after years of wimpy, ineffectual Dad characters in the 70's and 80's.
I also thought Roseanne Barr's comments throughout the series were spot-on......she is a smart and sassy lady!
Also "The Independent Woman" was episode two not episode one (at least on the Netflix version of this series).

The original broadcast order on PBS was different though:

No. Title Original Air Date
1 "Independent Woman" October 30, 2011
Far removed from the model housewife of yesterday, women today on TV care less about pleasing others, and more about being true to themselves.

2 "Man of the House" November 6, 2011
In 1950s television, the man of the house was king of his castle, but then he began losing control. Was it all an illusion to begin with?

3 "The Misfit" November 13, 2011
Whether they are oddballs, losers, or just plain weird, misfit characters have grown beyond comic stereotypes and are taking center stage with a vengeance, refusing to apologize for who they are.

4 "The Crusader" November 20, 2011
Heroes today are complex. Their stories are told with increasing humanity, depicting characters who confront almost impossible choices as they fight evil in a world where the line between right and wrong is often blurred.

I find it bizarre how it focuses mainly on comedies. I was surprised CJ from the west wing was forgotten
