I know it is a late response, but by 'original series' what do you mean? Do you mean the original Japanese anime series, or the bastardization (pardon my language) that they call the American Dub? If you mean the former, well yeah. They are dead. Big time dead. So dead that Lothar made a Robeast out of his own dad to get power. Lothar himself died fighting the character dubbed as Sven, who in reality is actually the original Sven's (saying Sven simply cuz I can't remember his Japanese name right now) brother who the dub passed off as Sven because, omg, he didn't die in the American dub! Oh, by the way. The brother died taking Lothar out. So, no. There is no possible way for Larmina and 'Sven' to have a child in any form of 'continuation'. As for the American dub, I can't quite remember off hand, but for all purposes of this so called 'continuation' of the Voltron series, I would just take the previous series as a sort of, how shall I say, spiritual predecessor. Next Dimension doesn't exist, that was pretty much retconned out, and this new series did not treat the main characters as nicely as they should have. I mean, take a look at the way the characters are supposed to look (ie, the old show) vs how they look in this show. I am sorry, but the last time I checked, Lance was NOT that muscular. And yes, that is an important plot point because the size of a persons muscles depends on their personality. Lance was a wiry, thin, flexible man who was quick to anger, comical, and could hold a grudge as well as any mule could be stubborn.
Oh, and if you are wondering why I have such strong feelings about the dub, even though that is what I grew up on and loved dearly as a child (albeit reruns), take this into consideration. Galaxy Garrison did not exist in the original anime. Nope. Those people you see that are referred to as Galaxy Garrison? Yeah, those are scenes from a completely different show with no ties to Voltron, whatsoever. While our heroes were in space exploring for Japan, WWIII broke out and nearly destroyed EVERYTHING. Earth was desolate when they returned in the first episode. Wanna know the worst part? All the characters are from Earth. You know what that means? Yep, you guessed it. When Pidges 'home world' was destroyed, it was Earth that was destroyed Yep. Earth go byebye. The boys pretty much make Arus their home because they ain't got nowhere else ta go. Needless to say, the old dub is nice for nostalgia and all, but for the real story, the real original, you want the anime.
Anyway, that is my not-so-brief reply. If you ever get aroudn to reading this, I hope I answered your question. As well as brought a new convert to the Original title 'Go-Lion'. Cuz that is what it is. 'Go-lION'. Not Voltron, but 'Go-lion'.
Oh, yes. Word of waring, if yu do wanna take a look at 'Go-lion', just keep in mind that rating systems are different in Japan and it does have a lot of death. A lot. And they don't exactly shy away from blood either. Oh, and I should mention one more thing there are no robots in this show aside from the protagonists rides. Not a single one. Those mooks they kill left and right? real soldiers. And places that are attacked are not evacuated. Take what the dub feeds you with a grain of salt.
Okay, i'll shut up now.
