Are Humans devolving? I've never read anything as ridiculous as making a film a PG because someone smokes in it. E.T. getting drunk is fine. Sexualising kids is fine. Insulting people's intelligence is fine. Rewriting history is fine. Fighting is fine. Showing war in a stylized manner is fine. Air-brushing and only employing people who are very good looking is fine. Giving children unachievable and unrealistic expectations is fine. Covert racism is fine. Sexism is fine. Showing political propaganda is fine.

Just don't smoke as it makes society cwy.

Making a movie PG makes it more interesting to adults, even if it's only PG because of a smoking scene. But, then again I grew up when smoking was considered normal, sadly. Even on kids' shows the adults smoked. Fred and Barney did ads for tobacco. I'm glad that has gone the way of the dino, but I wish people would hate obscenities as much as they hate tobacco.
