How long before she got back to the closet?

I don't think that was clear...

I'm guessing a month at the least?

I think the family was "rounded up" in July -- the family bought the flat in Aug and father-in-law said they were there just two days when Sarah showed up at the door.

"did everything just taste purple for a second?"

Yes, the Starzynski family was arrested in July 1942; the Tezacs moved in just two days before Sarah showed up, in August 1942. My guess is Michel was in the closet 3-4 weeks.

In addition to suffering from thirst and starvation, he could also have died from the intense summer heat--it was probably sweltering in the closet.

Yeah, it was probably about a month! Very sad story. :(

An old thread where we discussed this a bit. Bottom line. According to the movie, it was between 1 to 2 weeks (July 16th to early August, at the shortest). According to the book, it was between 2 and 4 weeks (mid July to sometime in August).

Heart-breaker... :(

Most of the Jews arrested during the Vel' d'Hiv roundup were held for six days inside the velodrome before the French began shipping them to camps outside Paris.

A few Jews eluded the police during the first day of the roundup, only to be arrested and taken to the velodrome later.
