Very very well done character development

I have to praise the animators for the subtle character growth in Loki and Thor in this animated feature. I love the symmetric contrast from the beginning and the ending to compare who is headed to ascend and who's struggling downwards the spiral.

The contrast of the scene in the stalls with Sif in the beginning (rejecting Thor and all) versus Loki with Amora (happily practicing magic and actually getting a romance of his own). Unlike Thor, Loki seemed a peacemaker, just mischievous.

At the end, the traumatic experience made Thor a better man for his mistakes but shattered Loki who realized his shortcomings. Now the magic scene is of him, unhappy and alone, freezing the water snake. While Thor gets a good ending of understanding, love and respect Sif in the stalls.

I loved the symmetry. Their situations tilted.

I agree with you. This cartoon actually had some pretty good character development which few cartoons usually have. I liked the contrast between Thor and Loki and how they eventually switched positions by the end of the film - Thor became more level-headed while Loki started acting more brashly (killed the advisor).

And you can see the difference in what makes Thor the good guy and why Loki will become the villain in the future: while Thor regrets killing the Frost Giants, Loki doesn't regret killing those who harm the people he loves. It's a great foreshadowing as we can see it coming true in the future.

I totally agree with you. This so much fun and interesting to watch

I was suprised by how much I enjoyed watching "Tales of Asgard" even though the animation style could've been better. After seeing the "Thor" movie, I was curious as to what kind of brothers Loki and Thor were in their younger years (I'm not into comic books, so I thought this would be a decent alternative).

I generally don't like cartoons, but the story and the characters kept me interested, and I certainly didn't expect that I'd become a little misty-eyed towards the end! (Loki tugged at my heartstrings in "Thor", and the same is true in "Tales of Asgard".) The arc of both brothers in this animated feature are very similar to what we saw in the live-action film, which I thought was a nice touch.

Question for anyone to answer...I enjoyed the "Thor" movie and likewise am interested in more back-story.

Would you recommend this show to buy or rent?

reply

@mormonhippie, I would recommend that you rent this animated movie (it's not a show). "Tales of Asgard" is good, but not great, IMHO. It's worth checking out, but it's not something that I'd need to watch over and over again.

Thanks!

It was pretty touching. Loki's characterization seems to match his reborn self rather than his young, past self in the comics. I would suggest you the current issues of Journey Into Mystery and The Mighty Thor since Loki's characterization is similar (brother loving, tormented young little boy with a knack for mischief).

Also "Son of Asgard" backstory even if Loki's a bit evil and shady there. There is more focus on Thor's journey to be worthy of the hammer, Balder, Karmilla, Valkyrie, Hela, etc.

Indeed it was very well done in that departament. expected far less from a typical thor movie.
