the shoes

Did anyone actually understand the significance of Fitzpatrick's hand-made shoes, that Langton notices when he turns up at the Incident Room?

Why do hand-made shoes imply that he's not a real Agent?

reply

Because of the cost? I imagine hand made shoes are very expensive and quite probably beyond what an FBI agent (or whatever he was supposed to be) could afford.

Even if the he could afford them -- or stretching possibility of being a gift -- how many agents would wear them for 'work'. Custom orthotics perhaps?

So either he has handmade shoes all through his wardrobe or he's not a real agent. It's not beyond the realm of possibility he was a real agent, but the shoes are a strong indicator he may not be.

In the book, he poses as an member of the fraud squad, and says hes been working undercover to trackdown Fitzpatrick. But if he was really an undercover office in a drug squat he wouldnt wear expensive hand made shoes as they would stand out too much and his cover would be blown.
Also, the shoes are custom made as they take a mould of the customers foot and then deliver them, which would be very expensive.
So basically he gave away the fact he wasnt an officer that works undercover by wearing shoes that an undercover officer would definatly never wear or be able to afford.
