Does Disney own the rights to the more familiar dwarf names?

I know the general tale is old and public domain, but maybe they invented those names?

Yes Disney is the owner of the Dwarf names, they created the names. I believe they also created the variation on the poisoned apple but cannot be certain as in the original tale it is a poisoned comb.

The version I have read (in a fairy tale compendium for my children) features both the comb and the apple.

It is also interesting to read the fate of the queen in:

Make's her fate here look much more civilised!

I would like to see the style of costumes worn by Disney's Snow White and the Queen in a live action version. But perhaps only Disney would be allowed to revive those original robes and dresses in a movie.

Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy et al are Disney copyright.

Earlier today I was watching 'The Making of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' They mention some of the dwarfs names that Disney discarded so I suppose they would be usable. I can't think of any of them offhand. But they're there for any re-telling of the Snow White story with added historical film interest.

I think they did, because in the original "Snow White" story, the dwarves had no name. They were just known collectively as "the dwarves." The 1939 cartoon was the very first to give each of them names.

I was fine with the names the dwarves had in this film, because it suited them better. Silly as some of the fight scenes were, you gotta give these guys credit for their creativity and ingenuity in tricking people into thinking they were giants. It's not everyday you meet dwarves that have spring-loaded stilts that can rob people and get away with it.
