what, exactly, was the 'A.L.A.'?...

...From that pamphlet a young man handed to 'Lily', and which the Cathar-adhering 'Xavier' quite strongly objected to?! I've watched this film, like, a bazillion times and still can't quite figure it out! As for those who didn't like the film, its level of screwball, anything-can-happen hyperliteracy was right on par with Stillman's equally riveting "Last Days of Disco". Throughout the movie, star GRETA GERWIG very much reminded me of the cool, blonde beauty of DISCO's CHLOE SEVIGNY, as both delivered their respective lines in a totally deadpan way. It's almost as if Stillman is trying to magically craft the perfect, icy cinematic blonde in much the same way Hitchcock did with TIPPI HEDREN! Anyway, loved DAMSELS, loved LAST DAYS OF DISCO! To my mind, Stillman is still very much on point as a filmmaker!

Where did you get that from, exactly? Were you able to magically read the pamphlet in question?! If "A.L.A." does indeed stand for what you suggest, then "Lily"s surprise over "Xavier"s heated vehemence would be completely understandable, as that was right in line with his (and the Cathar) preferred method of lovemaking! Why WOULD he get all defensive and object, then?! Your OBVIOUS answer only raises more questions in my mind! (Plus--if you don't mind my saying, you're kind of a snarky little b---h! Supercilliousness looks bad on anybody, dude! To paraphrase from the film, CIVILITY should be your watchword!)

Seriously? How was that obvious? I haven't heard of a real 12 step program called that, and people don't hand out flyers for anonymous 12 step meetings.
